Not hard to see who's "king of the hill" here, and we should know who's the biggest rail user.

The Heartland Express numbers were disappointing to me because that's a more or less local firm, based
in North Liberty (Iowa City area), IA. AFAIK they don't use rail.

Interesting how the players keep evolving, merging, acquiring, etc. Logistics Management's Top 50 providers (out last December) showed:

TL, from largest on down, from 1 through 10:

Swift, Schneider, JB Hunt, Landstar, Prime, Werner, US Express Enterprises, CRST, Crete, CR England.

LTL, from largest on down, 1 through 10:

FedEx, XPO, Old Dominion, YRC, UPS, Estes, ABF, YRC Regional, R+L, Saia.

I would provide the link but think you need to be a subscriber so don't want to violate any copyright issues. But interesting statistics nonetheless. Most are intermodal users, or have been. We'll see as driver-ELD/equipment shortages and railroad service issues all play out.
