I'll be there. But with no Pacific Parlour Car on the Starlight, I will fly SWA and save about a grand...sad.

I hit the road in the morning with an overnight in The Dalles.

I will be the guy with the full beard with a lot of grey in it.

Will be driving up from Sacramento on Thursday, looks like it’s gonna be snowing. Not sure what’s better, I 5 from Weed to Eugene , or 97 via Klamath falls , Chemult and 58 to Eugene. 5,000 ft elevation either way.

The only proper way to arrive at Winterail is by private railroad car. We will arrive Albany about 200pm Friday on train 14, but we have to go to Portland to park the car. First three people to reach me at 760 953 9620 can ride from Albany to Portland free with us.

Depends on the storm, I-5 Siskiyou Summit is the only high crossing on that part of I-5 but there's lots of bad curves and valleys further north for a heavy rain storm. Hiway 97 is high elevation but mostly straight, follow the snow plow and you'll be ok. But then the route crosses on hiway 58 and could be a real mess with chain control but more rain at lower elevation. Keep an eye on temperature and conditions, I-5 is probably less snow but ugly rain. Suggest planning for extra time unless you know the road and conditions. The area around Dunsmuir can be a real mess as well, depending on the storm.

+ Should have said that the mileage between the town of Weed and Eugene is almost the same using either hiway 97 or I-5. Interstate 5 has many more steep climbs and also faster speed limits, also more towns. Hiway 97 is much slower and often only two lanes, much more scenic though and right next to the old SP, if you know where to look.

Big problem comes when CHP closes I-5, definitely slows the trip up.

Jeff Moore (JDLX) and I are driving up tomorrow. Plan is to go via Klamath Falls. He's got chains and 4WD, so we're good. Had planned to take a couple days to go wander up towards Lakeview, but we decided this wasn't the year to do that.

Only bummer is that Oregon State University Baseball, currently No. 1 ranked in the nation is starting the Pac12 season at Berkeley on Friday, so no going to any baseball on Friday night in Corvallis. Oh well, you'll find me up in the theater checking my phone on the progress of the game on Saturday. Go Beavs!

If this virus hadn't grabbed me at the last minute, I'd be arriving Albany on 14 today. Unfortunately I've had to cancel the trip. Enjoy the show for me!
