Any New Snow News Along The UPRR, Sierra Mountains, Calif?
Author: RailRat

Just curious, checked my weather app, looks like about 15" of snow is forecast for Blue Canyon area for tomorrow, Thursday 3/15/18.

And I'm not sure which weather monitoring station is best to watch, in the highest elevation, or worse trouble spot for snow, along the UP, along the I-80 corridor. I just randomly chose Blue Canyon weather station. Any suggestions?

Friend of mine in Twain Harte says they are snowed in with about 20"

Blah, blah, blah. The NOAA Indian Valley forecast (Greenville) is in the range of 10-1/2" to 20-1.2" by Saturday AM.
The last storm with similar snow total predictions resulted in 3 inches at the house, which is at 3600'.

Blue Canon is on the west slope.

If you don't already have plenty of snow in the area, just wait a day or two. The attached it the NWS forecast for the next 48 hours. Looking at the blue bars and it shows about 30" in 48 hours. Another 3" to top it off on Saturday.

And a bigger, wetter storm is expected to hit next Tuesday, which is great.  All those trees on those slopes need every drop of water they can get.

Our weather forecast for today:

"Mostly sunny with a high of 67 °F (19.4 °C) and a 100% chance of precipitation. Winds variable at 9 to 14 mph (14.5 to 22.5 kph)."

They forecast mostly sunny with a 100% chance of rain and we're supposed to take them seriously?

Just added Emmigrant Gap to my Ap, that's the exit called Nyack or where the RR becomes very close to I-80. There's also a huge number of monitor points if you get into the Ski Resorts. I have the Ap called 'Storm' on my Android phone, allows checking a number of stations and also providing a nice tight Doppler Map which can be expanded quickly.

There's also the Truckee Cam: http://tahoetopia.com/webcam/downtown-truckee
It's a live streaming camera but shows current conditions in near the tracks. There is a time lag but you can easily coordinate to catch a Flanger or Spreader, Amtrak or a freight.

A website that combines the Caltran roadcams and local info: http://www.magnifeye.com/webcams.php#i80
They also show the information boards from Caltrans. The Caltrans site seems to use a lot more bandwidth.

If you have the time RR Radio hosts a Truckee radio feed, there are time lags but you can hear a train and dispatcher discussions or the nearby Truckee detector and then check the Truckee Cam and see the train go past the grade crossing: http://www.railroadradio.net/
The webpage has a pull down menu to select the location, download the link specifying one of the audio GUI's. I'm using an old copy of WinAmp that limits intrusion.
The Truckee RR feed is hosted by a TrainOrders member who posted quite a few snow photos recently.

Hope this helps.

Yes Thanks TCnR!
I recently installed the Weather Underground App on my Android, works way better and faster than thier add-clogged website!
Added Soda Springs to my favorite stations yesterday, and discovered access to several Caltran cams, close the selected weather station's area, they show a time lapse of conditions in high speed, but it gives a general idea of the weather conditions on the highway at least.

I will try the other things you mentioned also.

FYI it’s been snowing in the Feather River Canyon all day today since last night. Snow level this afternoon was down to 2000ft. Just below Tobin.
We were at Truckee yesterday and it was snowing all day there. Flangers were working. We didn’t even attempt I-80 west of Truckee. It was already a mess with a jackknifed big rig up there.
Hope this helps.
Have fun be safe

Hi Jim
It’s beautiful up here today. At Gold Mountain about 5 miles west of Portola we got about 10 inches of snow overnight. It’s been a great trip. I’ll be posting some photos when I get back to my computer.
Take care,
Doc Jones
