Long Beach City Council to hear arguments against rail yard
Author: casco17

In today's (3/18/18) Long Beach Press-Telegram, there is an article about an upcoming meeting on Tuesday with the Long Beach City Council. The Board of [Long Beach] Harbor Commissioners approved the environmental impact report in January. The Tuesday council meeting is a "last chance" for people/businesses who object to the yard to state their case. There are two local businesses that oppose the yard.

The Tuesday meeting is the only thing standing in the way of the Long Beach Port acquiring land for the yard. The proposed yard is near Pier B and would expand the existing yard from 12 to 48 tracks. Ninth Street near the LA River would close.

Why do the businesses oppose it?

If you look at the area (old SP Long Beach Yard), if its going to expand to 48 (!) tracks from 12, then the yard is going to be four times as wide. There are a few businesses on the other side of Ninth Street that would probably have to be bought out and displaced. I wouldn't be happy with the prospect either.

There is a rather large footprint of property that will have to be bought/taken for this project.

The two businesses are on Anaheim Street.
They are concerned about more exhaust emissions from engines, making it more unhealthful for employees to work outside.
Their representatives will make the argument that the environmental report was flawed.
They admit the odds are not in their favor...
