The impact will be great if one hits you :-)
But then again, on another thread today, could an autonomous truck be worse than some of the truck drivers we see on the road today?

Probably no worse then texting, sleeping and high trains crews vs.autonomous trains. I doubt you'll see an autonomous gasoline or propane tanker, or any autonomous truck anytime soon. Doubt it? Just ask the lady that got hit by an autonomous car in Tempe, AZ. Oh wait, you can't, she's dead.

How will you like to be waiting in line behind them waiting to get into the truck stop for fuel? What about when the traffic light turns red in the middle of the line? Imagine a line of trucks trying to merge into a busy interstate highway.

The whole idea sort of reeks of selfish stupidity. Let the truckers build their own independent rights of way like the railroads do.

The big challenge will come from drivers when they try to put all those trucks on the road.
Also, we lose two or three pedestrians to cars driven by people every week in this county and the number is rising due to people watching their phones.

I see insurance for autonomous vehicles being a huge problem.

Oh wait, news flash. It appears that she stepped out directly in front of a moving vehicle. Gee, what happens when a person does that? They loose.

Corporate greed is out of control! How much is enough for these people? Pretty soon no one is gonna be able to afford the goods and services these companies provide. Not everyone has the engineering mindset to adapt to these greedy technological changes! So where does that leave us?

Like the saying goes "Just because you can doesn't always mean that you should"!

They have been well taught by politicians.

Watching CNBC this morning, latest "fix" for the autonomous car problems. You let your auto car drive itself until you
get into a problem area ie construction, lane divergencies, etc and then you call a toll free number at which time an
operator at a console takes over for your auto drive and guides the car through the problem area where the computer
takes over again. Give me a freaking break, are we headed for a world where people aren't even capable of driving their
own cars?

Many drivers, including supposedly well-trained commercial truck drivers, are so poorly trained these days that it's about that bad now.

It is already happening, the dumbing down of drivers. Backup cameras and sensors so you don't have to look behind you, side sensors and alarms telling them when it is safe to change lanes, automatic parking mode, automatic light switches so they don't have to turn the lights off and on, remote starters so they don't have to use keys, and so forth.

Picture this. Winter on a western mountain pass with heavy snow and icy conditions. Coyotes working the pass chain up the driving axle on all the tractors. Nevertheless, you never drive slick roads with cruise control engaged. Never as in NEVER. the 2nd or 3rd rig spins out and jack knifes and heads into into the ditch. What do the following rigs do, safely come to a stop or follow the rig into the ditch?

Donner, Stevens and Lookout passed could become real catastrophies.

I guess if we want to assume that autonomous trucks will be permitted to run in severe adverse weather conditions. . .

Most people don't even know how to parallel park. They don't even teach it anymore. When I got my first license part of the test was you had to parallel park and not hit the cones.
I get a kick when I'm downtown watching some of these people "try" to parallel park. It' a HOOT!

If trucking companies are used to having one driver for six semis all summer do you think they are going to hire 5 new drivers to operate the 6 semis over the winter months. Imagine 5 drivers who have not been behind the wheel for 6-8 months and are suddenly dropped knee deep in winter driving? Oh, wait, the trucks are autonomous so all the new drivers just need to watch whats going on only takes over when the truck is just about to slide off the road.

There are countless ways to accomplish this. I'm not ready to commit to the belief that autonomous trucks will be traversing snowy mountain passes without a driver.

That's one of the incentives to purchase a self parking car
