Chasing the CP 5792 on the 4-WTO
Author: rrartist

Thursday morning, the skies were hazy sun with thickening skies to the west and I was waiting on a BNSF train about a mile south from my when I head the CP 5792 tone up the CP Iowa Desk and ask for a warrant south to Marquette Iowa. Time for the sounds of a needle getting pulled off the record!!! Let's see now, a BNSF Dash 9 versus a CP Rail SD40-2, hmmmm. Between the lack of interesting BNSF trains and the weather, I headed for La Crescent MN for a leisurely chase of the CP 5792 and it's 4-WTO train. The first image is at Millers Pond just south of La Crescent and the next were just past the Root River bridge.

I'll admit it wasn't a "high speed" chase by any means but fast enough to keep things interesting. The top image has the train passing the Lawrence Lake Marina north of Brownsville MN, some pretty tight quarters here. The curves along the Mississippi River pretty tight as well as shown in the middle image south of Brownsville and the bottom image has the train coming off the Reno (MN) dike. Looking I should have used a smaller lens to capture the dike scene, oh well on towards New Albin Iowa.

The weather to the west was looking pretty mean as I waited south of New Albin (IA) for the CP 5792. Passing probably the most photographed farm scenes on the this line, the CP 5792 rumbles passes this farm roughly fives south of New Albin.

Lansing Iowa, where this chase come to a close as the weather was closing in. Passing beneath the bridge which will lead east to Wisconsin and the road back north towards La Crosse, the CP 5792 and the 4-WTO still has 20 some miles of River running to get to Marquette Iowa. Thanks for riding along!

Nice to see some of what were bridges of concern being replaced. Especially the one in the first shot. The 160 miles from Sabula to La Crescent has about 190 bridges, many of which were timber when I was the DE at Bensenville and then Manager Structures. The line also has 700+ curves along the river. Always loved hirailing in the spring just before all the ice went out to see all the eagles and then in the fall for the colors.
