Western Railroad Discussion > Original SP Signal Bridges on Donner PassDate: 06/20/18 20:58 Original SP Signal Bridges on Donner Pass Author: BoilingMan I got to wondering just how many of the original SP Signal Bridges are still up on Donner. I found 23 of them on Google Earth (marked in red). It's possible I missed a few, but I'm going to say nearly all! Only a few of them are still in use, so I would think many may be scraped at some point, but I've seen no indication of that happening right now.
Just figured someone else might be interested in this. SR I also marked the newer aluminum bridges the UPRR has added in yellow.. Date: 06/20/18 23:33 Re: Original SP Signal Bridges on Donner Pass Author: E25 Let's hope the UP signal dept. doesn't spot this little revelation... LOL
Definitely a helpful aid for rail historians, though. Thanks for taking the time and effort to put it together. Greg Date: 06/21/18 06:04 Re: Original SP Signal Bridges on Donner Pass Author: Doodle Norden, soda springs has and Troy are still in use. Any others?

How about West Truckee? Date: 06/21/18 09:34 Re: Original SP Signal Bridges on Donner Pass Author: BoilingMan The East end of Shed 10 is in use- new LED signals, but the bridge is original. The searchlights are still there, but turned.

None are cantilevers? Where's the one at Emigrant Gap? Date: 06/21/18 18:41 Re: new Signal Bridges on Donner Author: BoilingMan The one at Emigrant Gap is actually up against I-80 on the West end of Switch 9, and I think it’s a cantilever, but it’s a new aluminum UPRR type.
SP didn’t put up many cantilevers on Donner- the only one I recall off-hand was down in Boca on the Truckee River. SR |
