Need it to be affordable, 4x4, and enough seating for the clan. Would like to add a vehicle mounted mobile scanner, laptop mount, go light, and LED strip lights as well. Theres been quite a few times when its pitch black and the lights would be welcome. Also would like to be able to get ATCS finally on a mobile platform. My hand held scanner just doesn't cut it so I'm hoping a mobile one will boost the reception. Should be a fun project Jon in Az Posted from Android Date: 07/17/18 22:00 Re: Railfan vehicles... The other vehicle is a Truck camper with an older Chevy one ton. Date: 07/17/18 22:15 Re: Railfan vehicles... Author: DynamicBrake From the mid 70's until '2000, my '73 VW Bus served my wife and me extremely well! The rear seat folded down, a 4" foam pad and a double wide sleeping bag made for a cozy bed at night. Spent one night in Santa Fe, NM where it got down to 13 degrees. Overall, it proved to be very reliable.

Date: 07/17/18 22:52 Re: Railfan vehicles... Author: ATSFSuperChief First one was my fathers 1956 Ford Pickup. Second one was parents 1949 Lincoln used from Maryland to Colorado round trip in 1950's. My first one was an 1969 Volvo 1800S was fantastic as fast and very good on dirt roads, had rear air shocks to raise clearance (lost in forest fire in 2012). Second one was 1966 Lincoln Contential two door, heavy car with great traction (sold in 2016). Third one was 1976 F-250 4x4 with winch, chains, jacks, could go anywhere (sold in 2017). Now using 2004 Ranger 4x4 and 2011 Toyota 4 Runner both very capable to go anywhere. Volvo was fastest (overdrive helped, souped up engine), Lincoln also fast, chased 3985 from Tie Siding, WY to Hanna, WY very nice trip with excellent memories.

pick up for all sorts of adventures including rail fanning ... the ole pu is now approaching 500K miles (all mine) ... next rail fan trip is the UP844 Cheyenne Frontier Days sojourn ... I'm leaving 7/18 for an overnight in Cheyenne and then a safe chase of the 844 on 7/19 to select spots south of Cheyenne ... last rendezvous will be at Greeley on 7/19 ... where there is usually time to photograph the consist car by car ... Ya gotta pick your spots for that one ... way too many enthusiasts now days in my honest opinion playing Russian roulette on US 85 trying to do the "pace thing"; ... BTW there still be construction slow downs between Eaton and PierceCO on US 85 ... have several other rail fan trips planned down the road including the Joiliet Rocket in September and the OCSRR steam photo tour in October ... See ya on the road! Odyssey Evergreen, CO |
