Western Railroad Discussion > Upper Mississippi River trip.

Back in June I had some time off so my son and I took a trip to rail fan the Upper Mississippi river area.  

We took the ferry across the river at Savanna. We had hoped to see the CP train cross the bridge but it was just switching in the yard.

Mississippi River Palisades is a very nice area to watch trains and take a hike.

We visited the National Mississippi River Museum in Dubuque and camped at Grant River Recreation area.  It is a very well maintained campground with BNSF on one side and the river on the other.  Just bring ear plugs as the trains are very close and blow for a crossing.  We had orginally planed to railfan further north but weather didn't cooperate so we went south to get out of the rain and fog.  Caught a CP local outside Buffalo, Iowa and a unit Sand train climbing out of the river valley at Letts, Iowa.

We went down to Ft Madison and got a tour of the Santa Fe Station and caboose.  However a strong line of storms were coming so we didnt stay long.  Ended up in Cameron, IL for a few trains before dark and a butterfly drying its wings.

Yes. Didn’t really have plans to cross river there but decided to just for the fun of it.
