Sherman Hill 1994 - "After the Rain"
Author: cinder

It's June 1994......A heavy shower is now to the east as I look west, a few hundred yards west of the Hermosa Tunnels.  Dusk is settling in, but all is well.

That's really a nice shot , even without any train !   I also like the signal placement , to give better visiblity to the oncoming trains .

This is my favorite location and view on Sherman Hill.  I'm saving this gem . What a truly superb image !
Can someone please tell me if those are the Medicine Bow Mountains in the distance ?  Thanks,  Kelly.

Kelly, I will ahve to dig out the topographic map to get the correct info. I know that is looking at the Medicine Bow National Forest. But the north end of that is the Snowy Range which is to the right of this setting in this photo. You are looking at the mountains on the Colorado Border.

Leftover E.H. Harriman influence from the early
20th-century rebuilding of the Union Pacific.

Nope, that’s track 3 on the left, track 2 in the middle and track 1 on the right.

The view is to the west, the signals there protect the east bounds.

It’s a different view, but the signals for west bound movements come up on you pretty quick coming out of the tunnels. For years the best you got at dale was a diverging approach if crossing over at hermosa, so you had be prepared to stop, after starting downhill in the middle of the tunnel.
