New Railfan Restaurant, Oregon City, OR Amtrak station
Author: Coalca

Coasters Crossing, a new restaurant located inside (and out) of the historic Oregon City depot. The building was moved some years ago to the new Amtrak station. Its affixed atop a burly concrete platform due to the floodplain. Food was surprisingly good! Burgers, wraps, salads, and seafood.

#1, The restaurant, amtrak platform is to the right.

#2, From my seat, Uncle Pete sent a stack train past us. I was ordering when the head end went by

#3, a SB Amtrak Cascades departing the staion (this is the rear)

#6, The other part of the restaurant, those windows do not face the tracks

So judging by the required elevation of the concrete platform, they estimate that UP is in the floodplain.

If the timing is right, I'll have to stop in on one of my Winterail trips.  Thanks for the pix!

did lunch today......pretty good food, nice place, reasonable prices!   there are some tables on the exterior south end that would be pretty good for train watching as well as the bar inside.   no amber beer so did coffee but pretty good selection of Pales ......worth the stop!    Arlen

Yes, very much in the floodplain. Here's an image from the 1996 floods I've added some labels to.

What????   No amber beer in an Oregon bar?  They surely will not last long.

Hopefully their revival will come someday, but mainstream amber beers are a thing of the past in craft centric areas like Portland. As with the rest of the name by color styles. . .

So the floodwater is from a tributary that is not draining very fast into the Willamette?

'96 flooding went all the way up the Willamette to Benton County (Corvallis) and also reached low-lying areas along the lower Columbia. Portland's west-side river wall was sandbagged and water reached the lower level of the Steel Bridge. Heavy snowfall late in January, rain, and saturated ground were the primary causes. Eight people died, another 3000 were forced out of their homes.

The Willamette River backs up into a tributary just south of the station called Abernethy Creek. The Abernethy is dammed further upstream, creating Beaver Lake. Sometime about 20-25 years ago, the dam received a freshened fish ladder and more flood control features.  Before that, the Abernethy would flood on a yearly basis. It was kind of the towns rain gauge, how full was the Abernethy. Now it barely gets up to its banks even in the hardest rain

The mouth of the Clackamas River is right there.

All great beers! In fact, sitting in the Full Sail taproom is one of the most relaxing beer experiences anywhere. Nevertheless, a dying breed as the style has little variety to offer.

Damned right, Arlen! None of that wimpy lite of wheat crap for us Real Beer drinkers. Personally, I prefer Negra Modelo, and keep in in the refrigerator all the time. Doyle loves it too.

Anchor Steam is a decent amber and seems like a natural for railfans. Easy to find in Oregon.
