Longest Train, I Ever Saw (Joint Line 245 cars)
Author: skyview

As luck would have it, was trackside on Oct 12 and saw the 245 car, 11,000+ foot long train mentioned earlier here on Trainorders.  That said, how does one capture a 245 car train in an image that shows the length, well not so well here as it looks like any other northbound empty train.   The 4 DPUs mid train were a good clue (no doubt the 2 lead units of the 2nd train coupled to the 2 rear dpus of the first train).  The train had 2 units up front, 4 mid train, and 3 on the rear.  I guess at least I can say I saw it, and it decidely was the longest train Ive ever seen.

I believe the UP sent one through SoCal a few years back that was 18,000' long. It took twenty minutes to clear the crossing. I believe it was captured by one of our TO People!

Nice catch, Tim! I wouldn't want to be the conductor if they got a knuckle near the end of the train...

That's the best time to make them pay. Outlaw and tie up main for as long as possible. Make sure every train on the subdivision outlaws as well!

Somewhere in accounting someone is very happy because of all of the "saved" crews that didn't need to be called and paid.

This is true -- January, 2010, a stack train.  I've got it on video here someplace.  On the video it was about 4'20".  It had two sets of mid-train power -- 3x2x2x2.
It was done as an experiment.  Politicians raised holy hell, then realized that there was nothing else they could do about it.  That was enough as when the whole mess got back to the VPO the question was, "WHO thought that was a good idea."  Having been the recipient of those sorts of questions in my career, I can attest that they are effective in causing one to change his way of thinking.

Could please tell me where this is on the Joint Line? I'm going out there from Florida in a couple of weeks and would like to get some shots at this location with the hill in the background.

Castle Rock, CO.  That view was an later afternoon view.  Earlier afternoon is better for south bounds on the west side of town where the line comes tnext to I25 and curves over a new bridge.  From there south are some views with the rock in the background.  South of CR are some views of trains with Pikes Peak in the distance.  The 2nd bridge seems better, but does require a bit of walking.  There are some views from the golf course too.  Pikes Peak is amazingly hard to get into photos of trains!  Many are very time of day specific.  Like the south end of Nevada Avenue in Colorado Springs.  There is a road just east of Nevada Ave on the north side of the tracks.  Another is the new trail at Greenland that runs to Palmer Lake.  North end has some views that include the peak.

Good hunting!

Rob
