Toto Tuesday: Frosty the Railfan
Author: santafe199

You know a train is on the way. You have a good shot location picked out. You're all ready. One problem... With that Kansas wind it's bleeping COLD out there! You can't wait inside your warm rig because the train will surely be on you before you can jump out and get back into position. So you just stand there hunkered down in the cold. Maybe a few alternate verses to Frosty the Snowman come to mind.

Sound familiar?

1. BNSF 6999 leads a re-routed intermodal westbound at Wakarusa, KS. Taken from just north of town at SW 93rd St on March 2, 2013,

Thanks for looking!

I know the location well, most of my dad's family are scattered up & down 93rd steet and the Wakarusa area. My earliest RR memories go back to that crossing, always hoping to a train on the way out to the farm, sometimes hearing one when we got there, knowing we just missed it.

Me too - we would sit at Pauline and wait for No. 11, then race to 93rd street and to the crossing with the usual failure of seeing silver as we turned off US-75. Thanks for the memories Lance.

A NICE look into the weather future. Been there on that in cold and snow, lol.

One of my favorite places to watch and listen was at the top of the big hill, north of Carbondale, at 125th street. It was especially fun when they were running loaded coal trains on the Topeka sub, the head ends were down to about 10 mph there most of the time, and break in twos were common as they leaned into the curve. It was better with manned helpers, and DP, but there's a lot of scrap iron laying around up there.

ahem.... Whatabout the 'danged pole-line', Lance...?

Pretty 'retro', bub -- and a really nice shot.

Looks rather like a company publicity
(insert RR name here) photo, that 'un does.

(Ahem! :^) Once upon a time that 'danged pole-line' had 4 or 5 cross-arms carrying the main trunk of Santa Fe communications in & out of Eastern Lines HQ of Topeka, KS from the south & west side. I've done a complete 180 on the old comm lines. Where I used to get pretty annoyed having to always shoot around them, I now miss the visual element they ultimately added to a given RR scene! (We're just never satisfied, are we???)...
