A few hours on the UP in San Timoteo Canyon, CA today...
Author: PasadenaSub

Spent a couple hours along the former SP Sunset Route between Redlands and Beaumont, CA today.  A nice day, between the high clouds I saw 5 trains.

1) Starting out at the big curve near the town of Beaumont, I came across a slow moving westbound manifest, with this DPU pair bringing up the rear.

2-3) Same train just west of the grade crossing near Hinda.

4) A new-looking tank car, OCAX 6281 in the same train.

5) The DPUs bringing up the rear, with the fishing lakes in the distance to the left.

6) Not long after, a hot eastbound intermodal came along - with 3 units running elephant style.

7) Quite a few pigs on the same eastbound.

8) Another eastbound, with autoracks leading doublestacks in the same area.

9) The 5 elephants passing my ride, a 2013 Honda Civic.

10) The DPU of the same train.

11) After about an hour lull, another pair of trains were converging on the El Casco area.  Here's the eastbound at the grade crossing just east of the famous curves.

12) Knowing a westbound was approaching, I figured the eastbound wouldn't clear in time so I headed west to where the tracks rejoin San Timoteo Canyon road.  The train was a doublestacker with 2 units up front.

13) A broadside of UP 2644.

14) I figured the westbound would have a DPU, but was surprised to see it was a BNSF unit, C44-9W 5375.

15) Another view as another railfan gets his shot.  This would turn out to by my last train, and I conveniently returned to Riverside via Redlands Blvd and the 60 freeway.

Thanks for looking,

Rich

I viewed the photos which you told me about yesterday.  Brought back memories seeing the old haunts where I used to run trains.
