Some help with my memory, pls
Author: BobE

I handled a slide of BNSF 724 not too lomng ago, and it trigggered some elements of memory, but some confusion, too (lots of things I used to know, I don't anymore).

Were the units in this group the oinly red and silver units delivered with BNSF lettering?  (They did go straight to BNSF, didn't hey?  Or were they delivered to AT&SF and I've forgetten that).

I vaguely recall that 4700 number series  was involved.  Delivered as 700x and renumbered to 4700s or wwas it the reverse?

TIA,

BobE

The BNSF 700 series Dash 9s were part of a 172 unit order delivered between June 1997 and May 1998. The numbers are 700 - 799 and 4700 to 4771.

Units 700 through 799 (except for 739, 740, and 745) and 4700 through 4720 were painted in red & silver warbonnet, the only GEs delivered in BNSF warbonnet. Some (776 and 777 for example) were delivered in primer and painted by BNSF after running for a time in primer.

Units 749, 740, and 745 were the first Heritage 2 units and 4721 through 4771 were all painted Heritage 2, although many arrived with just the green and orange paint, but without lettering, some had nose logos and some had the yellow stripes, while others did not.

Whiole these are the only GE's delivered in BNSF "Warbonnet" paint, we can't forget the SD75M/I's that also came in "Warbonnet" paint with BNSF lettering.
These are still running around on the BNSF although they're now mostly repainted.  At delivery, they first batch had Santa Fe fonts and large BNSF lettering
on the long hood.  The later ones had the more standard BNSF fonts and lettering.  The orginal Santa Fe SD75M's were renumbered to the 8200 series, and
the BNSF delivered units were numbered above that, but they were all renumbered back to the 200 series to clear numbers for the ES44C4's.  Almost all of
the ex-Santa Fe units have been returned to the lessor, but the BNSF ones soldier on.  Just some addtional information.

A few of the first factory GEs in heritage paint came with red walkways like the silver and red units.

The warbonnets ended at 4719.  The 4720 came in orange and green.

The low 700's still had "Santa Fe" in the noseband with "BNSF" on the hood, but beginning around 718, they started carrying "BNSF" in the noseband.  The "BNSF Warbonnet Checklist" page on Qstation has the details:

SD75M's 200-250 came in red and silver with full Santa Fe lettering - these were subsequently renumbered BNSF 8200-8250.
SD75M's 8251-8275 came in red and silver with BNSF lettering.
SD75I's 8276-8301 came in red and silver with a smaller "BNSF" on the hood but bigger numbers on the cab sides relative to 8251-8275.

Thanks all.  If I've followed this correctly, 4700-4719 were not renumbers from the 700s, but different units entirely.

More variations in paint/lettering than I remember, wonder how many I got.

Didn't know about the walkwat thing.....being a grond-based photographer (i.e. no drone), I never saw the walkways,  Interesting info Alan.
