It Sure Looks Like George H. W. Bush Liked Trains
Author: walstib

A question arose today in one of the other Bush topics about whether the former president liked trains.

Judging by this photo, I would say he did. In fact, the newspaper called both 41 and 43 "electric train enthuasiasts."

I snapped this picture of a display at the George W. Bush Childhood Home in Midland, Texas when I visited there in 2016.

I'd say it's not surprising as Lionel trains were as common in the 1950's as Legos are today.

If not mistaken, isn't that a Marx train in the photo?

Yes, Marx. My late father, a WWII NORMANDY combat veteran, was an avid MARX and American Flyer collector.

Great photo!  Thank you very much for posting that....  I wonder if the photographer who took that photo was around long enough to realize his photo was of two future US Presidents.

Looks like the tender is on the ground. I always liked the smell of those tin plate short circuits.

Indeed he did like trains.  He, Barbara, other family and diginitaries including John Major made a trip up the Valley from Sacramento aboard a special UP train.  The train laid over in Dunsmuir and went north the next day.  Made a stop at Mossbrea Falls where a temporary platform had been constructed.  A gracious pleasant man, made it a point to meet the crew.

Marx trains would always outrun every other contender in the electric train races! (They were designed to run on lower voltage than Lionel or American Flyer).

That unique smell of the MarxTrains was what we called 'Ozone'.
It was from the sparking of the commutator brushes in loco's motor.
