Galesburg,IL railfanning
Author: tehachapi-dave

Good evening,

Going to be in Galesburg, IL in a few days and wondering where in/around town to go, and what the traffic levels are there.

Thanks

There is a small park where the Old Santa Fe and Old Burlington cross with the Old Burlington passing overhead.  You catch most of everything.

Peck Park is the name...Trains are the game...Sometimes the "Trimmer" the yard job switcher will come all the way out to the park, then push back west building trains...Galesburg is the 2nd largest yard on BNSF...Stevie

You can also go to the Route 10 bridge which goes over the yard and is railfan friendly. It was built wide with walking lanes on both sides

The other spot is Cameron which isn't to far west of Galesburg. The old Santa Fe went over BN at that spot

I will add this:  Cameron is a tough spot because of parking.  The east/west road that parallels the former Q has virtually no
shoulder and thus you can't really park on it.  There is a public storage place just east of the overpass that is a good spot
in the morning.  Afternoons, you'll have to be more creative.  I usually go to the first grade crossing on the former Santa Fe
west of the bridge. It's about a quarter mile from the former Q but if something's coming on that line, I can easily get over
there.  I usually stay on the former Santa Fe which is the busier line.

Don't forget the Amtrak station and the museum nearby or the large yard south of town.  The park is my favorite place, however, in part because it has a porta-potty (when you get old such things become more important).
