Update on locomotive M & R, at OERM (SCRM) 12/15/18
Author: TomPlatten

Currently we have seven locomotives in our operational fleet. As of Saturday, three off those locomotives were awaiting parts. Two of those locomotives are vintage ALCOS where obtaining parts is becoming increasingly difficult. The OERM 1975 is awaiting brake cylinder part due to air leakage. It uses an obsolete brake cylinder design. The cup can been made but would require an minimum order and would be costly. We are making inquiries into possible alternatives. SP 1474 is in the middle of a v-belt change out. This as it turned out to be quite a chore for Tom,Tim and Bob as getting the old belts off requires much effort. We will forge ahead until it is done!
SF 108 must have one of its two cranking motors replaced. We have a spare--essentially truck starters--but it must be tested. This is the only locomotive in our fleet that does not use its main generator to turn the prime mover for starting. When starting the 108, those twin starters make quite a racker as opposed to the rather gentle sound of a main generator rolling the prime mover over until it starts to fire. Regardless, both systems require good batteries!
Dave was able to replace the O-ring on the Fuel Oil filter cannister on the SP 3100, It leaked profusely during its stint as the Santa Train locomotive. Dave was able to acquire new O-rings plus some extras as there are three filter cannisters on the locomotive! The photo shows the old O-ring on the left and the new one on the right. After changing out the O-ring Dave activated the FO pump which puts out about 35lbs. of pressure. No leakage was observed. 3100 is available to the museum.
Carl, John, and , Frank completed reinstallation of the power assemblies in the SP 1006. They did a preliminery tightening of the Crab Nuts prior to the final torqueing to specs which is 1800 ft lbs. We are closer to pulling the locomotive outside and filling it with water to check for any leakage inside the block.
