Sunset on the BNSF Jamestown Sub
Author: bmarti7

On Friday, December 14, the Mandan Yard told the BNSF 6367 East (loaded coal) that the DPU's were fueled and they were "good to go". Sounded like a clearance for me as well as the sun was just setting. I intercepted the mainline east of Bismarck and followed it along old US 10. I noticed an eastward flashing yellow, west of Burleigh and yellow over red at West Burleigh. So I waited there and soon a light appeared in the east. Then the westbound called out the diversion into the siding "27 mph". It was the BNSF 4069 West with a merchandise train. After the meet, I headed east, passing the coal train and then looking for a spot in the country where I could hopefully get some sunset color, and away from other light sources. I picked the crossing of county road 353rd St SE, east of Sterling.

BB

1. The BNSF 4069 West slows to a stop in the siding at Burleigh
2. The BNSF 6367 East roars by with a loaded coal train
3. The merchandise train had three auto carriers. That seems unusual to me. This sub does see an occasional unit auto train, but I can't figure out why a few auto carriers would be in a westbound consist.

4. The coal loads work east as the sky darkens
5. In the Lance and Larry tradition, don't forget the DPU's

Still love those elevators out there on the prairie. Great shots.
