GP-30 dragging back into the yard!
Author: santafe199

On Christmas Eve I was in my old Santa Fe base city of Emporia visiting friends. During the rather overcast day I ran around the area shooting whatever RR ‘stuff’ I could find. That’s an old habit which is impossible to break. I found this elderly BN GP30-looking switch job laboring mightily to drag the day’s haul into Emporia Yard from the industrial area around NR Jct on the east side of town. Most of the tonnage came from the Bunge complex along East St, between E 6th Ave & the BNSF main line(s). Even though it was moving at a snail’s pace, it was an audible delight to hear that 50+ year old EMD graduate growling for all it was worth…

1. BNSF 2806 is dragging a large amount of Bunge Elevator tonnage back into the yard in Emporia, KS. This Cascade Green unit still looks like a stranger in a strange place 20+ years after the merger!

Thanks for looking!

Figured this would’ve been an ex CB&Q engine but it’s actually ex L&N 1031

Neat catch and shot! There can't be too many of those left in green.

Okay, Lance, a nitpick.  This is not a true GP30.  It was rebuilt to GP39 specs by the BN and you need a roster to
tell who rebuilt it and what it's descended from.  That said, I call them GP30's too and this one looks really good!
And the ones that have been BNSF'd also look neat!  Thanks for posting.

It had to be good ol' Nick with another perpetual-motion nitpick. Did you even see where I used the phrase "GP30-looking". All ya gotta do is READ...

Kinda surprised the headlight is still on the cab and not relocated to the nose.

Lance, are you trying to fool our panelists with a look-alike impostor?   Paging Johnny Olson:  "Will the REAL GP30 please stand up?"

One thing I learned since I started posting in the Nostalgia area is that people don't comprehend what they are reading, are looking for some kind of debate, like to show off their "vast" knowledge, OR, just want to nit pick. Most of them have nothing else to post. You're doing just fine, and I enjoy the photographs you post

Well to nick pick your nick pick, it is a GP39M which means a Morrison Knudsen rebuild. None were done by BN. EMD did the "E's" and VMV did the "V's".

Great Photo Lance..... It has a GP30 carbody which makes it a GP30. Who cares what the guts of locomotive have been changed too.

Yes, I've had a little taste of that nit picking stuff myself.  But I don't post much.

IF that is indeed the ex L&N 1031, the BN did a great job of body work covering over the headlight in the nose. Back in the day on the L&N, the oscillating headlight was above the cab with the headlight in the nose. All of the original L&N GP30's were non dynamic equipped.
Spent hours running those units on locals out of Pensacola, Fl.

Lance,

Trade ya our Santa Fe GP30 for yours????!!???   (See these TO threads for pic's:  https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,4657086,4657668#msg-4657668https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,4639915,4639915#msg-4639915 )

Our SF GP30 looks out of place on a former NP branchline in Washington State, IMHO..

Lance,

Regardless of all the posts referring to what that unit REALLY is, you of all people should know that it is NOT a "GP-30". EMD did NOT use the dash in its model designations.

Again, the BN didn't do any of it.

Railroad Mechanical departments care about the guts.

So, as a GP39 (no dash) I assume it has been remotored with a 12 cylinder turbo 645?

The "39" was selected because they use GP39-2 electrical specifications. Dash 2 cabinets, AR10 alternator's and D77 or 78 traction motors. The prime mover develops 2300 hp for traction.
