Spreaders on Donner?
Author: Doodle

With reports of 2-3 feet of new snow around summit falling tonight and more tomorrow, will this be enough to bring out the spreaders? Or do the flangers do a good enough job to keep up?

Thanks!

They will come out for cleanup work at the end of the storm

Also, understand that flangers and spreaders do two different jobs. Basically- flangers remove snow from between and below the top of the rail, whereas spreaders push snow away from the track. The point being that when the snowfall gets deeper the spreaders don’t take over and relieve the flangers. The flangers are still needed to remove snow the spreaders can’t get to.
Just a clarification.
Carry on...

A flanger set made a run eastbound over Donner Sunday morning, arriving in Truckee about 9:30.  Seen on the Truckee webcamera: http://tahoetopia.com/webcam/downtown-truckee.  About 15 minutes later the spreader went west and was followed another 15 minutes later by the westbound CA Zephyr #5.

Yesterday afternoon the webcamera showed gridlock in Truckee due to I-80 being closed.

For those veiwers at home the Flangers run as a regular train, they set off the trackside detectors, obey red's and greens, talk with the dispatcher etc. The spreaders take a track warrent, or whatever they're called, perhaps by way of a Laptop, then go out and do their thing without much radio chatter. When they're done they give the track back, perhaps by laptop as well.

I haven't heard exactly how it works but have noticed when they had been out working there was not much radio traffic.

I clicked on that web address, and then got a notification from Avast of an infection that it blocked- JS:Redirector-BJB [Trj]  I guess "Trj" means Trojan.

That happened to a couple of people a few days ago.
Once again it loaded fine for me. I'm using an adblocker that probably kept it out, using MS Security Essentials.
