Too Early at Daze on the BNSF Phoenix sub
Author: RayLewis

We all know how frustrating train photography can be. Hell, even on the busy Seligman sub it seems you cant get a train when you need it from time to time. On the Phoenix sub its even worst and eastbound trains in the morning are hard to come by. For the better part of the last 6 months I have tried to be here to catch an early morning eastbound when I could. In October I was driving west down I-40 from Williams just before sunrise and my excitement grew as I noticed the empty containers stretched across the tracks south of Ash Fork about 15 mins before sunrise. I knew I had time and I thought the train was just far enough to give the sun time to rise. I thought for sure today would be the day. But today wasnt, the sun was about 10 to 20 seconds too late from lighting up the rails, although the sun did cast enough light on the locomotives and a few cars it just wasn't quite what I was looking for. Here BNSF 4642 leads the BPHXCHI4-19 east at Daze (between Williams and Ash Fork) on the Phoenix subdivision.

I added the 2nd photo for persective. First shot was with a drone, second with a DSLR same curve.

Nice shot! Like sometimes in horse shoes it was an excellent near miss. It's also an excuse to go back. On the bright side, the days are getting longer until June 21!

For lack of a better theory-- the train
is on the curve at

https://goo.gl/maps/RzCVRoYDaj62   ?

Are you holding the camera, or is it
on a drone? Topo map doesn't look
like you can get this much elevation.

Think you can barely see the old r/w
at the left edge of the pic-- SFe widened
the curve in the 1970s or some such.

Two units was all? No DPU?

Its a drone. You can get elevation from  a different angle. I will add that to the thread.

Thank you all..and yes its very curvy between Ash Fork & Williams. The Phoenix sub has many locations like this, Hillside, Grand View just to name a few. Before 1960 this was the original transcon alignment. In about another track mile east is where the train would have continued through Johnson Canyon. But today the Phx sub uses the former transcon 2nd main once it leaves Daze.
