Western Pacific passing under the SP in Sacramento early 1960's
Author: photobob

An eastbound WP train has just passed under the SP mainline in Sacramento in the early 1960's.

Is the Haggin connection on the right,
or had it not been built yet?

I posted this on the wrong board. I wish I had just taken this today instead of 1961.

And right where that train is passing are some of the flood gates for the city of Sacramento.  Close the gates = the WP was under water.  That water would have been from the American River, which is spanned by the trestle in the distance.

Nice pic Bob, too bad it wasn’t taken yesterday.

How often have they had to close the floodgates there? I remember seeing the news show the gates closed on the UP around Marysville years ago. Once when flying from Sacramento back to college after Christmas you could see how flooded the American River was, there were trees sticking out of brown water everywhere, it seemed like everything was flooded.

I see two vents on the caboose roof. One for the stove, the other for...?
P.S., another great shot P. Bob.

Always liked the look of the modern WP cabeese.

Had the photo been taken yesterday they would be stuck in the canyon behind yesterday's slide.

Of course! I was thinking something to do with food prep, an oven perhaps. Thanks!

I remember one year in the late 80's / early 90's when the AMERICAN RIVER almost went over the tops of the levees--it was literally a matter of inches, and only a small few.  The gates were closed then.  The entire city was on edge...
