Cement from there built the LA aqueduct and much of Southern California and is still a major local employer

Back about 50 years ago, Monolith had a narrow-gauge railway.  By the time I visited in 1972 (or thereabouts) the electric operation was out of service, and the diesels were on borrowed time.
