SOO Line Sunday - Fuel Tenders
Author: back_track_bob

This posting features the SOO's 4 fuel tenders. I only managed to lens one of them on a dark, crappy day at Shoreham. The images are from slides I purchased on e-bay for my collection. I do not have the photographer, date etc.

Image 1, Tender 4000, St Paul Diesel Shop.

Built by EMD as Milwaukee Road #185 (3/1966), renumbered to MILW #2005 (1968). Acquired by SOO Line (1985) and renumbered to SOO #2005. Converted to Fuel Tender #4000 (1987). Retired (2003). Dismantled at Ogden Shops, Calgary AB. (8/2007).

Image 2, Tender 4001, looks like passing the MNNR shop based on background equipment.

Built by EMD as Milwaukee Road GP9 #2370 (2/1958). Renumbered to MILW #262. Rebuilt as GP20 and renumbered to MILW #948 (10/1973). Acquired by SOO Line (1985), converted to Fuel Tender #4001 (1986). Retired (2003). Sold to RailPower Technologies, converted to battery powered "Green Goat" UPY #2004 (2/2005).

Image 3, Tender 4002, Pigs Eye yard St Paul.

Built by EMD as GP9 Milwaukee Road #2371, renumbered to MILW #263, then to MILW #949:2. Acquired by SOO Line (1985), converted to Fuel Tender #4002 (1987). Retired (2003). Dismantled at Ogden Shops, Calgary AB. (8/2007).

there's 1 more..

These seem like a better fuel tender then the BN used. Thanks for posting these I didn’t realize the SOO had any.

Was there extra tanks in the car body or did they just use the fuel tank?

I was told SOO had a lot of problems getting the tanks to seal up, which is why they had a relatively short life.  I would agree this was a better
solution than the BN's.  The latter, I'm told, had a lot of trouble with the buff forces on the couplers of the tank cars.

What were the used on? The longest runs like maybe Portal to Chicago?

Why did the SOO feel the need to have fuel tenders?   Were they used to run from Chicago to the farthest tip out in North Dakota or something that would justify the need for the longer legs?   I wouldn't have thought of SOO as finding themselves in need of such equipment.

As I recall working for the Soo, and a friend of the CMO who designed these, they were to be used on run through trains. The run throughs were to handle a CP connection from western North Dakota up to and through Detroit after we got trackage rights on CSX to reach CP and Montreal. I never really heard if they were used on these trains as by that time I was on the new WC.

They were tried at least once on the Chicago-Buffalo trains that ran over NS.  Here's one on NS 084 at New Haven, IN in May 1994.
