Western Railroad Discussion > On 1, Approaching 9, @ E Gap (Cryptic Enough?)Date: 02/06/19 08:53 On 1, Approaching 9, @ E Gap (Cryptic Enough?) Author: BoilingMan Let me decipher this: This is at Emigrant Gap on Donner Pass. The flanger is heading East after having turned on the balloon track at Fulda, a couple of miles west of here. Behind them are , oh, I don't know... about 185 miles of double track (from the Bay Area). And a quarter mile ahead is Switch 9, where the RR is reduced to single track for a relatively short 7 or 8 miles before returning to double track again at Shed 10 (insert scathing editorial comments here).
SR Oh- And they're running on Track 1 in the photo(s) Date: 02/06/19 09:54 Re: On 1, Approaching 9, @ E Gap (Cryptic Enough?) Author: CaliforniaSteam Nothing but great comments...... Outstanding work I really like image #1.

For these I drive a "purpose aquired" beater Subie. SR Date: 02/06/19 11:42 Re: On 1, Approaching 9, @ E Gap (Cryptic Enough?) Author: all-nite-junk-train How fast is the flanger allowed to move?
Date: 02/06/19 11:59 Re: On 1, Approaching 9, @ E Gap (Cryptic Enough?) Author: callum_out SP used to be 35 mph, doubt that's changed.
Out Date: 02/06/19 12:10 Re: On 1, Approaching 9, @ E Gap (Cryptic Enough?) Author: BoilingMan 35 is probably right, and maybe that doesn’t sound like much, but up here on The Hill- it’s kinda startling!
They can sneak up on you. If you want a photo it’s all but imperative you lay in wait- otherwise, you look up and they’re gone! SR Date: 02/06/19 13:50 Re: On 1, Approaching 9, @ E Gap (Cryptic Enough?) Author: norm1153 I like how you worded this one!
Date: 02/06/19 14:11 Re: On 1, Approaching 9, @ E Gap (Cryptic Enough?) Author: callum_out It's only "probably right" if the timetable isn't lying!
Out Date: 02/06/19 14:21 Re: On 1, Approaching 9, @ E Gap (Cryptic Enough?) Author: BoilingMan Jeez- I meant the UPRR hasn’t changed the SP’s SOP.

Out Date: 02/06/19 18:08 Re: On 1, Approaching 9, @ E Gap (Cryptic Enough?) Author: railstiesballast Some serious landscape photos there, never mind the train.
You could crop out the flanger run and just give us the texture of the dark pines and lighter trees in the snow on the far hillside. Date: 02/06/19 18:19 Re: On 1, Approaching 9, @ E Gap (Cryptic Enough?) Author: BoilingMan Anymore, I honestly cannot tell one locomotive from another- so in a way, I don’t really shoot train pics these days. I shoot photos with trains in them. (I think that’s an old Steinheimer adage?) There IS a difference.
SR Oh, for the days of SD9’s and SDP45’s on The Hill... sigh Date: 02/06/19 19:12 Re: On 1, Approaching 9, @ E Gap (Cryptic Enough?) Author: callum_out Date: 02/07/19 10:06 Re: On 1, Approaching 9, @ E Gap (Cryptic Enough?) Author: BoilingMan For a bit of context: This view is looking over at Monumental Ridge on the far side of the North Fork of the North Fork of the American River. The North Fork of the North Fork of the American River meets the North Fork of the American River about 10 miles down stream, below Gorge where the RR makes the spectacular overlook of Giant's Gap.
SR Sorry- I was just looking for an excuse to write North Fork a bunch of times. It's the simple things that amuse me. |
