BNSF in Emergency at La Plata
Author: MSE

At ~7:45pm CST, a BNSF merchandise train, on Main 2 because of approaching #3, went into emergency in front of the camera.   You can even see sparks fly toward the grade crossing. It is visible at Virtual Railcam but Trainorders will not allow me to post the URL.

Cause of the emergency is unknown and the train got underway relatively quickly.

I've been looking at the Laramie cam on and off and it makes me wonder if UP has a different kind of emergency where things are startling to get messed up from PSR. A stack train has been sitting for 24 hours, and then a mixed freight/autorack train sat next to it for 2 hours, maybe waiting on a recrew. Imagine that happening at La Plata!

You can rewind the feed to 19:44 and see the action. I didn’t see any sparks but it was interesting to watch

You can hear the air dump just as the locomotives are passing the camera.

Imagine if the train in emergancy was one of those multi-mile one's.  That conductor is going to be out walking for a long, long time.

I've circled the location of the sparks so you'll know where to look. There are two very brief appearances.

Don't recall exact numbers but if speed and tonnage are right and air comes back no need to walk.

LaPlata has a couple agents but they’re only at the station when Amtrak is close I believe. #3 was close so that’s why you saw people on the platform

I'm not sure on BNSF/UP, but some Class 1s have updated their rules to no longer require the train to be walked if a series of conditions are met (like not going through a switch) and the air restores.

The last BNSF GCOR that I have says:
Loaded unit trains and trains moving at 30MPH or more and less than 5000 ton are relieved of walking inspection.

Anymore, other than a repo train, they probably wouldn't even call anything that was less than 5000 tons so imagine this has been superceded with an update.
