A few shots to and from Winterail
Author: wpamtk

My companions and I got in some railfanning before and after attending Winterail. We drove up I-5 from the SF Bay Area to Portland on Thursday the 14th and caught some CORP action:
1. The job from Weed has arrived at Hornbrook and waits for their conterpart from Medford to arrive and swap cars.
2. Returning to Medford, the pair of SD40s cross Colestin Road on the way to Siskiyou Summit.
3. Near Creswell, the hauler from Eugene to Winchester has UP power, including the WP heritage unit.

4. On Friday, we started with a look at the Peninsula Terminal RR, in Portland along the south bank of the Columbia.
5. After an unsucessful search for the Portland-Vancouver Junction RR's power, we visited the Columbia Business Park. Their EMD switcher appears to be a Santa Fe SSB-1200 rebuild, and the number suggests it was one of those that went to Amtrak. In the background are ex-Pacific Lumber (Scotia, CA) GE 80-tonner #102 and a GE 25-tonner.
6. Near Stevenson, we found this F9 displayed at the Columbia Gorge Interptretive Center, a beautifully-done local museum. Of course, SP&S never owned an F9 but it's a nice touch.

On the way home Sunday, we stopped for a few roster shots.
7. Portland & Western had three GP39-2s parked at their ex-BN facility in Eugene.
8. In Medford, CORP's lineup included a pair of GP38-3s and two SD40s.
9. Sun and blue skies in Weed allowed a shot of CORP power with Mt. Shasta as a backdrop.

Are they removing or rebuilding the stairway up the side of the F unit?  It was sure a detriment to stopping in for photos!

The PVJ unit is often up toward Battle Ground end of the line, along NE St Johns Road south of 78th Street.

PT also has a job that goes down to a small yard on the UP at North Macrum Ave at N Junction street.  I have seen them there a couple of times in late morning.

Medford job leaves town around 0730.  Spends a lot of time in the trees.  Best bet is to leave town with them.  They don't run fast so don;t get too far ahead of them or you will wait, wait, and wait some more!  Take old 99 to Steinman, fascinating loop for road to head up the hill.  Can't drive in to summit tunnel, so walk, or climb hill at Interstate exit.  West side has a dirt road (Coleman), not bad in good weather.  I wouldn't consider it in snow.  Make a day of it, and have fun.

Any idea about why there's a tarp over the cab? Is the roof leaking?

I don't know if the stairway on the F-unit engineer's side is going to be replaced--a photo I saw showed stairs on both sides, which I agree would really ruin photos. As for the PVJ, we looked all over in the vicinity of NE St. Johns around 78th St. We found several freight cars, a company truck, and that big derrick, but no power. We drove around a lot, but finally decided we needed to move on. We'll get 'em next time!

Tarp????  Which unit?  Are you thinking the white roof on the SDs is a tarp.  They are painted white.  Reflects sun and heat.  It get rather warm there in the summer sun.
