Western Railroad Discussion > Mop heritage down the GSRDate: 03/21/19 08:35 Mop heritage down the GSR Author: santafe199 I got out to chase the Mop heritage unit UP 1982 earlier this month, but I’m just now getting around to posting the full story. Better late than never, eh? Truth be told, there’s not much of a story to tell. Just a routine chase with a few captions notes. Hop in, and let’s go chase! I promise we’ll be home for supper…
1. First shot of the day is along Burr Oak Rd southwest of Alma, KS. UP 1982 looks fine at the point of train MKSWT-02. 2. & 3. Approaching & passing under the Sea St overpass in Alta Vista, KS. This fine, sturdy, mostly safe structure will forever be known as “Lilwes’ Overpass”. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/21/19 08:47 by santafe199. Now at the rural J Avenue crossing we see our 1982 chase subject has fallen into the great Bermuda Triangle of the GSR. This siding starts in White City extends about 3 miles to the SW. It can easily ensnare a couple of trains indefinitely. Because of congestion in & around Herington Uncle Pete’s westbound trains can take the hole here and never be seen again. Or so it seems to the many crews who suffer this fate…

Date: 03/21/19 08:44 Re: Mop heritage down the GSR Author: santafe199 10. Lady luck is riding with the 1982! Only one eastbound is met and Herington can take their train. Here they are just off the US hwy 77 overpass embankment NE of Herington, KS.
11. Two more shots as the train creeps into Herington: Looking north up rural Vane Rd, and… 12. …looking east at the KS hwy 4 overpass just north of Herington Yard. Date: 03/21/19 08:45 Re: Mop heritage down the GSR Author: santafe199 One more, and we can break away…
13. The 1982-led consist works as a switch engine, doing some extensive train setout & pickup work in Herington. Rumor was they had a very sizable block of cars to pick up for forwarding down to Wichita. There’s an eastbound stacker just coming in off the GSR. At this point I turned my attention elsewhere… (13 photos taken March 2, 2019) Thanks for riding along! Lance Garrels santafe199 Date: 03/21/19 09:09 Re: Mop heritage down the GSR Author: Ritzville Thanks for the interesting chase with UP 1982 the "Mop". The area looked cold and dry with no leaves on the trees yet.

Eeyup, it wasn't exactly shirt-sleeve weather. But in the 3 weeks since we've seen temps in the 60s, trees are budding and the color green is just starting to sneak up through the ground... Lance Date: 03/21/19 13:46 Re: Mop heritage down the GSR Author: overniteman Nice catch, nice shots!
