UP Short Line Yard to Close

Post on the Iowa Railroads Facebook says Short Line Yard in Des Moines is closing. Doesnt say when. This is going to be interesting.
Short Line is the ex Rock Island Yard. Hull Ave, the ex CNW yard., will remain open.

Interesting.  Short Line is a busy yard that’s nearly twice the size of Hull Ave.  I wonder if it’s because of the location.  Short Line is a on a dead end (for UP) and everything enters and exits on the west end.  Meanwhile, Hull Ave is on the mainline.  Or maybe they’ll preblock more traffic at South St. Paul, Council Bluffs, etc so they can minimize switching at Des Moines.

Shortline yard was too close after the merger with CNW, never happened, UP was going to use/expand Hull Ave, never happened. Des Moines could be a Hell Hole to get trains into, out of, and thru. I am glad I am retired and can sit back and still be amazed of the next idea coming out of that Cess Pool  on the Missouri River. KCRW287

Moving shortlines switching to Neff yard in KC. Hull ave yard to remain open.
