The Union Pacific YLA63R South Industries Job (and its sister, the YLA51 East Industires Job) has been running recently with a picture-perfect clean ex SP GP40P-2 commuter engine (with mini wings). With such nice power, I took the opportunity to chase the train this past Friday, May 24 around Vernon. 

Image one is a clean roster of the GP40P-2, which had a paint date of April 2019.

Image two is either the parked YLA51 East Industries Job or the waiting YLA63R South Industries Job on the siding as the first crew has left for the day and the second crew is yet to arrive.

Image three is another angle of the train waiting on the second crew.

Image four is after the second crew has arrived and pulled the power to run around the train.

Image five is of the train shoving north to drop some interchange cars in the Los Angeles Junction yard.

Image six is of the train now on the Los Angeles Junction.

Image seven is of the power pulling away after making a drop in the LAJ yard.

Image eight is now back on the San Pedro Line as the power has returned to the cars it had left on the siding.

Image nine is a side on view of the power in the same spot.

Is the crewmember in the last few pics doing RC operation of the train?  It looks like that GP15 might be equipped with the gear.

The 15 was remote control and that is a remote control job. I believe the 40's much more powerful engine gave them a bit of a power mismatch issue.

Is that the only one left on UP? I remember that one went to IHB.

#1375 is also still on the UP roster and is working out of City of Industry California at the moment.

As long as they don't leave it unattended at the Fourth Street yard it should survive.

Very nice set of images. With the Illinois Central having lost their 4 axle flare so many years ago at Cobden, Illinois, it's great to see one on another carrier still earning its keep in 2019. The baby geep looks great as well.

Super action photos and sweet looking power.  1373 didn't have the nice baby wings a few years ago when I rode it in local service in Kansas.  Nice to see it got the re-paint.

When were the GP40P-2s ever used in helper service on Cajon? Weren't they captive to the commuter trains in San Francisco?

Until CalTRAIN took over in 1985.

I shot one in 1986 as part of a two unit helper set on Cajon, were stationed at Devore for a couple weeks.

UP 1373 is fresh out of an overhaul at North Little Rock, having been released on May 9th, and is now considered a GP40N by the UP. It had an electrical modernization done as part of the overhaul, just like the SD40-2 fleet got when they became SD40N.
