Is a repeat of the 1993 midwest flooding on the way?
Author: Lackawanna484

Some observers believe conditions are setting up for a repeat of the 1993 "Great Flood".  That flood, which cost 50 lives, is considered the worst in modern history along the Mississippi.

The rivers are running well over their banks, with plenty of water still upstream. Soil is saturated, and unable to handle any more water. Conditions in the Gulf of Mexico and Bay of Campeche are ripe for generating moisture laden storms, with a jet stream farther south than usual to give them a push.

Farmers, already hurt by a double whammy of chaos in the export markets and a late spring planting cycle, are on edge. People who remember 1993 are packing up valuables.  Many areas along the bottoms, including those with railroad tracks, are under water.

Can’t speak for that area but big issues in Arkansas. Record flood stages all along the namesake river.
Central Arkansas supposed to see the crest today and tomorrow.

Central Indiana has seen a little every day. Not enough for severe floods, but keeping the planting at bay

Whenever you see a highly aplified jet stream pattern, such as seen recently, there is always a risk of this happening because the pattern tends to be slow to change. This pattern has also caused an unusually rainy and cool May in large sections of California.

Already here. Including all the sights AND smells of a war zone in Jeff. City that experienced a tornado the Wednesday before Memorial Day. Expecting another 5-7 inches of rain this week starting tomorrow. As a sidebar, the University of Missouri-Columbia discovered over 300 NEW mold species after the 1993 flood never seen before in the history of the state. Missouri achieved statehood in 1821. THAT is a long time to be a spore.

Places in Kansas that never flooded in 93 are flooded now.   It hasn't reached some of the area around the mouth of the Missouri where it empties into the Mississippi river.   Nebraska and Iowa have places flooded right now that didn't flood in 93.   They are considering parts of this when it gets down to the lower Mississippi to be comparable to the floods in 27.

As of 6p CDT, Monay, June 3, here is the NWS's latest quantitative precipitation forecast. From this and other late data, it appears most of the rainfall the next seven days will be south of I-80 rather than farther north as it was in 1993.

Forecast rainfall amounts this evening are considerably less than they were prior to the tornado and flood siege that began May 17.

They haven’t gotten to the point of purposefully breaching levees yet that I know of.

The Army Corps of Engineers plans to open the Morganza Spillway on June 9 for only the third time since it was built in 1954.
