Western Railroad Discussion > TRANSCON Training - Part 3 - Williams, AZDate: 06/05/19 09:08 TRANSCON Training - Part 3 - Williams, AZ Author: cinder After a couple of days in the Kingman area, I relished getting to a higher (and cooler) elevation on the Transcon where the evergreens softened the rocky landcape and scented the air. So I drove from Kingman through Williams to Flagstaff before returning to Williams for an overnight stay. The temperature Monday morning, May 13 was a brisk 30 degrees. Williams is 6,770' above sea level after all.
1. Eastbound at Williams Jct. which is a couple of miles east of Williams. Best with morning light. 2. Grand Canyon passenger excursion returns to Williams in late afternnon 3. East of Williams Jct. into the early evening sun. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 06/05/19 09:26 by cinder. Date: 06/05/19 09:15 Re: TRANSCON Training - Part 3 - Williams, AZ Author: cinder 4. Over the head of my bed at the Super 8 just east of Williams. This motel is rail-convenient and inexpensive.
5&6. In the cool morning air, I spent a hour trackside just off North Airport Rd. and was blessed by a steady flow of trains. The head end was intermodal; the rear section was unit ethanol (1987).

11. Williams at sunset. 12. San Francisco Peaks in late afternoon. Tomorrow (Part 4), the focus is east of Flagstaff as I work the picturesque San Francisco Peaks into a couple of train pictures.. We actually saw that combination intermodal/ethanol train at Barstow at dusk the day before when we were driving back from railfanning the Needles subdivision, crazy just how slow that thing was moving across the transcon!
