Western Railroad Discussion > Abandoned Reefer in Cajon PassDate: 06/09/19 00:46 Abandoned Reefer in Cajon Pass Author: grandtrunk Well, my assumption from the other day (since we really don't know) is that a car jumped on a WB UP train (maybe at Silverwood) in Cajon Pass, dragged it by the Dragging Equipment Detector and they stopped (with the wrecked car about 1/2 mile west of the detector). Wrecker lifted the car off the rails and deposited on the right of way, they buttoned up the train, creeped them back down the hill, fixed the track and back to normal.
I found the car today. Again, I just tried to put two and two together. I could be TOTALLY wrong--- before y'all get any ideas. From what I have been able to gather from my sources (and from the pics obviously), it's a "dismantle on site" car now, and was still running when i took these today (Saturday). The logistics involved in getting the refrigerated product transloaded is incredible.. I'm sure they're considering writing off the contents. May be produce, may be meat. In any case, here are the few shots I took while I was spending my last full day in the pass before heading back to Chi-town tomorrow... Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 06/09/19 01:17 by grandtrunk. Had to imagine something of value left unattended.

Curious how it got that way, and was still moving along with the train... Date: 06/09/19 06:58 Re: Abandoned Reefer in Cajon Pass Author: SCAX3401 needles_sub Wrote:

Strong possibility. Turn on the reefer unit to burn all the remaining fuel. One less than thing to remove when scrapping the car, that way no concerns about spillage. It looks as if the center sill was peeled apart like a banana and a majority smashed sideways through the side sill and sill step. With that type of damage, the coupler had to of been attached until the "pocket" was ripped apart. In fact, in photo #2, there looks to be the coupler and (mostly) intact draft key sticking out! Unload it, haul to a land fill and bury it.
