Not worried. It will be preserved. Even without Amtrak, It's large enough to have have multi -tenants including restaurant space. Even after it started as a city funded fiasco, the Tucson depot is doing pretty well these days. -Matt

You mean the Sun Link Urban Trolley? It's still making traffic more difficult while not meeting it's revenue goals. The city got monorail scammed on that one from the Portland Streetcar Co. Apples to oranges between the two projects though. -Matt

It woiuld be great if AMTRAK actually stopped in the HUGE city of Phoemix again.

I know the Seattle's South Lake Union Trolley was called the SLUT - (which is why the folks who support it call it the Streetcar instead) Didn't realize Tucson had also found a way to use the acronym!

And here I always thought that stood for the Salt Lake Urban Transit system...

I just went by the station last month when I was on jury duty in downtown Phoenix, and had the same thought. It was more than 20 years ago that the station served passengers, and I don't think that it was actually busy during its final years. Phoenix was not an important city when the rails were being laid, and until about 1920, Bisbee was the largest city in AZ. Hence, the city of Phoenix was not on the main line.

Apparently, there have been efforts to revive rail traffic, but I've heard of nothing in the last two years I've lived in the Valley of the Sun. On the other hand, plans are afoot to update Sky Harbor airport to serve greatly increased traffic there.

Did you see  that those plans including trenching the line to expand the airport to the north? It was in an AZCentral article yesterday.

I'd think so. It'd be dumb not to, but.....

I think it's two tracks out behind the Garratt plant so I'd assume they put both in the trench. That airport is already huge, be soimething
to see it even bigger. Used to fly into there on Air West, one major terminal, damn near hit the outer fence every trip on hot days. Freaked
me out a few years ago, always wondered what happened to the old terminal, they just built around it and preserved it in the new
building, pretty neat. Heard that's the building to be flattened and upsized, ah progress.

The city owns most of the land on both sides of the railroad right of way. They plan to expand and move all the cargo facilities on the north side above the UP. The Hoenwell factory will also have to go.

The Garratt Honeywell facility is huge and has been there for many, many years, hard to believe they'd either
tear it down or move it. It was our Phoenix office's number one account.
