B23-7's, RS27, and SF30B On The Minnesota Commercial
Author: Ohiorailfan

The Minnesota Commercial in Minneapolis, MN runs some unique power on their trains. The roster is mostly B23-7's and B39-8's, but they also have the last operating ALCO RS27 and the only built SF30B. I spent 3 days around the Twin Cities catching various jobs.

The first job was the New Brighton Job on Sunday which runs between their yard and New Brighton and interchanges with CN. The job normally runs with 2 units, but this day ran with 3. We caught it a few times on the northbound and southbound run. Power was Ex ATSF B23-7's #43 and #44 and B39-8 #58. The #58 was dropped off in New Brighton

All shots taken June 23, 24, and 25

Monday morning I woke up early and got track side around 7am. Upon arriving at the yard the yard job was working with a B23-7. Around 7:15am the Hennepin Job showed up with #316. The 316 is one of only 2 remaining RS27's left and is the only operable one. The Hennepin Job works up towards Belt Junction where it works an industry before heading towards Hennepin Avenue. I followed it for a few hours before leaving. During their switching we got a few belches of smoke that ACLO's are known for.

Tuesday I awoke again early in hopes of seeing the #42 on the Hugo Job. Shortly after 7am the Hugo Job was leaving their yard with SF30B #42. The #42 is the only SF30B anywhere and was rebuilt from a U23B by ATSF in the 1980's. The Hugo Job heads towards White Bear Lake where there are a few industries. This was the last unit on their roster I wanted to see as they recently sold their operating C424.

I have never see the Coil Covers removed or stored
What kind of overhesad crane do they use and how are they stacked or stored until the car is unloaded and ready for return?

Very cool series with excellent photo presentation. It’s been awhile since my last visit to the Twin Cities so forgive my lack of knowledge but in your first photo there seems to be quite a line of power on one of the outer yard tracks. In times past as I recall, they held their power close by the roundhouse. Is that all gone now?

No, they have an RS18 and had a C424 that was operable, but they just sold it
