Anyone Know of Track/ROW Work in Nevada?
Author: tronarail

Today, my friend (a truck driver) was eastbound passing through Sparks, Nevada when he observed a UP Rail Train going westbound near Sparks. From an article in Trains Magazine, (some time ago) it was reported that rail comes in from Japan to the Port of Stockton, and is then welded together and loaded onto trains. His question is, if the train was westbound, where did the train load the welded rail and where was it heading? Thank you for any information.

There was an ANPMI run west to Sparks last evening that was PSR all the way - manifest traffic on the front, auto racks in the middle and an empty CWR train on the back, probably being returned to Stockton for reloading. Service with a smile, the UP way. That might have been the train your friend saw.

Haven't heard of any big rail projects in that region this summer but that doesn't mean there isn't something going on somewhere out there.

The UP still gets rail from Evraz at Pueblo, CO. I believe this is the higher strength curve rail. They have an upcoming project on Donner, this rail is heading that way. Some of the rail gang equipment for the project is coming south having just left Klamath Falls about an hour ago.

UP had steel gang 9001 and turn out gang working the Nevada sub over the last month/month and half. Steel gang moved to the Elko sub doing work now. Don't know if they're working on main 1 or 2 but they are out there right now.

They are dumping rail near Colfax CA and working east from there.
