Western Railroad Discussion > Life without Trees part 2 - ElkoDate: 07/21/19 15:49 Life without Trees part 2 - Elko Author: CBRL This is the second installment from my trip through Northern Nevada.
1. When I rolled into Elko I caught this westbound intermodal on the west end of town. 2. After checking in and grabbing a bite, I explored the town until I found the yard at the east end of town. First train I caught was a westbound Auto Rack that stopped for a new crew. 3. Next up was another westbound intermodal train pulling in to the yard for a fuel up and crew change. Three more from after sunset. Tom Trent Eugene, OR Date: 07/21/19 15:56 Re: Life without Trees part 2 - Elko Author: CBRL 4. After sunset I headed west and caught a unit train of some kind rolling by a plant called Ash Grove.
5. A loaded coal train pulls up behind the intermodal waiting to enter the yard. 6. The coal train waits as an eastbound manifest heads out of town on the old SP track. Apologies if the last two are a little dark. I was frankly surprised by the amount of activity in Elko, coming from the Brooklyn sub that has a fraction of the traffic of the Overland Route. I did my usual mode of railfanning, just jumping in the car and seeing what I can find, so any information about these trains would be most welcome. I have one more set of pictures from Silver Zone pass area that will be in another post. Thanks for looking. look around. Out Date: 07/21/19 20:00 Re: Life without Trees part 2 - Elko Author: Copy19 My wife was born and raised in Elko. I’ve heard a lot of of family railroad stories from WP and SP days.

Thanks for the photos.

Beat me to it:-) Like five the best too, works on so many levels. Enjoyed the whole photo essay. Thanks for posting. Hope you enjoyed the trip as much as we all enjoyed the report. internal trackage between the two railroads, was fun to call on them. Out Date: 07/22/19 11:40 Re: Life without Trees part 2 - Elko Author: brc600 I have had several tours and pictures of the Louisville Ashgrove plant. I'll have to post some.

Was a fun place to railroad, town left much to be desired. Great photos, thanks for the memories.
Ryan Date: 07/22/19 17:02 Re: Life without Trees part 2 - Elko Author: callum_out Most of the rails and other assorted better off mining types live over the hill in Spring Creek but you're right,
otherwise the town considering it's local money isn't too exciting. I had three guys in our Midwest Region who were in various industrial businesses in Elko and moved to the Midwest to get away from the huge swings in mining, though that has gotten a bit better in later years. Out Date: 07/23/19 00:11 Re: Life without Trees part 2 - Elko Author: zfan Thanks for the coverage. Elko is almost like a second hometown I head out there so much. Love driving through the yard. Actually came through there last night on # 6 to Salt Lake, but was asleep. Very smooth railroad these days. Probably why I was asleep.
