Counts - BNSF vs UP in Arizona - 07/20/2019
Author: SouthWestRailCams

Good Evening,

For anyone that is keeping track, attached is the data for the month of July 2019 with data updated to 07/20/2019 here in Arizona.  The numbers on the left hand side and plot points for that given day was processed by the system.  Please keep in mind, these are not "official numbers" by the railroad, however, the counts come from certain control points along the Subdivisions that are in Arizona (BNSF - Seligman Sub and UP - Gila Sub).  UP has other routes in and out of California which make up for the less traffic volumes along the Gila Subdivision.

So in the long run what does this mean?  Those places have more BN trains than UP?  More tonnage than UP?  More empty cars?...............................?????

Daily train counts on the BNSF and the UP main lines across Arizona.

Interesting Thursday seems the busiest day on both RRs there.   Just thinking about UP, Tucson seems to always be jammed as it is now.  Hard to imagine how they handled over 50 per day there.

About the UP's alternate routes to LA:  How many trains are running on the LA&SL between Salt Lake and Los Angeles?  I still think UP is
behind here, but can be corrected.

The LA&SL sees about 15 trains in a 24-hour period.

ILBG3 Long Beach ICTF, CA - Global 3, IL Su, Tu-Fr
ILXAH Los Angeles LAXT, CA - Chicago Ashland Ave, IL (NS) Su, We, Sa
ZLADV East Los Angeles, CA - Denver, CO Tu-Th, Sa

Thanks for the reply, Andrew.  I counted 13 trains running on the LASL and three unit train to make 16.  That still puts UP behind BNSF as the latter is running some 70 trains a day while UP using both routes is only running about 51.  It's unfortunate that Christina cannot supply the numbers of intermodal trains and omit the manifests.  Still, I'm finding these daily posts very interesting.

Hi Nick, The only thing I am omitting are the Locals, UP's Phoenix-Tucson, Tucson-Phoenix Trains and BNSF's the Winslow-Phoenix and Phoenix-Winslow trains.  If the other routes that UP has a ATCS Monitoring server setup, I can setup to logs those to the scripting.  Not sure if its available. I am already doing it for Ritzville and can be setup to do up to 8 different connections.

Thanks, Christina, but Andrew's post is enough.  What I'm seeing here is that BNSF is hauling more into California than UP.  It's an odd situation, I think, and not one you would expect.
