Western Railroad Discussion > Life without Trees part 3 - along the shared trackageDate: 07/22/19 11:15 Life without Trees part 3 - along the shared trackage Author: CBRL After taking all those shots in Elko my plan for the next day was to take a look at Palisade Canyon and then head out for Silver Zone pass.
From Palisade, where I saw no trains: 1. The entrance to Palisade Canyon looking East 2. Looking west in the early morning 3. The two truss bridges across the Humboldt River near Palisade (Several more to come) Tom Trent Eugene, OR Date: 07/22/19 11:19 Re: Life without Trees part 3 - along the shared trackage Author: CBRL Then it was back on the freeway to head east!
4. Had to stop and take this shot along the SP line at Deeth 5. Found UP 8234 at the head of a stack train heading east on the WP trackage. I would catch this later near Clifside. 6. There was lots of activity on the UP Lakeside Sub north of the freeway. (several more to come) Tom Trent Eugene, OR Date: 07/22/19 11:24 Re: Life without Trees part 3 - along the shared trackage Author: CBRL 7. Finally got to the Silver Zone siding but nothing going on.
8. When I got back to the highway I saw the stack train from far off 9. I did not get as far as I wanted before the eastbound headed around the Arnold Loop. Here is the train as it crosses the Clifside siding after rounding the loop. (more, including a westbound) Tom Trent Eugene, OR Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 07/22/19 11:36 by CBRL. Date: 07/22/19 11:29 Re: Life without Trees part 3 - along the shared trackage Author: CBRL 10. UP 8234 rolls past my location.
11. At least I was able to get a shot of the front and rear of the train as it headed down the hill. 12. After waiting for eastbound trains to clear at Wendover, UP 5440 westbound finally showed up right after the sun went away. (three more) Tom Trent Eugene, OR Date: 07/22/19 11:33 Re: Life without Trees part 3 - along the shared trackage Author: CBRL 13-14 are shots of the westbound as it crosses in front of me at Clifside. That was as far as my Kia could get!
15. The train passing above me after crossing the loop. I have some shots of what remains of the Modoc Line to share later under a new series (there are a lot of trees out there) Thanks for the looks and comments, much appreciated! Thanks for sharing! Hopmere Hank Date: 07/22/19 12:10 Re: Life without Trees part 3 - along the shared trackage Author: King_Coal The engineering required to build these railroads becomes a bit more transparent when there are no trees. The first time I saw Silverzone, I was really impressed by what WP had done to cross the desert. Thanks for sharing these.

Date: 07/22/19 15:09 Re: Life without Trees part 3 - along the shared trackage Author: BobL A lot of water in the Humboldt River as shown in picture 3.

Date: 07/23/19 00:23 Re: Life without Trees part 3 - along the shared trackage Author: zfan Love that you referenced Deeth. Coldest temperature I've ever heard on a railroad detector was at Deeth, at minus 35 degrees, some 30 years ago. Scary cold in the Great Basin to say the least!
Date: 07/23/19 00:30 Re: Life without Trees part 3 - along the shared trackage Author: zfan Very cool pics!! The Western Pacific really built a beautiful railroad, particularly over Silver Zone pass. No one ever sees or photographs it because it is, sadly, so remote.

Date: 07/23/19 08:36 Re: Life without Trees part 3 - along the shared trackage Author: CBRL Thanks for all the comments! It does look like the rocks in Palisade Canyon are volcanic dikes - notice the river did not try to cut through them but went around. It was really fun to go out to the desert and explore, just wish I could do it full time. I will add a picture of the sunset on the North Humboldt range as I drove back to Elko. Next up - ghosts of the Modoc.
Tom Trent Eugene, OR Date: 07/23/19 09:49 Re: Life without Trees part 3 - along the shared trackage Author: atsf121 Great photos of places we don’t see often on Trainorders. I always hated the drive from California to Utah to see my Grandma, from Reno to Salt Lake just took forever, and we still had an hour after Salt Lake. The only thing that made it bearable for me as a kid was looking for the trains along the way. There are a few spots along the way that I’ve grown to like after all of the drives across the desert. But I’ve never stopped for photos, so I’m glad you took the time to capture some really interesting locations.

We did the drive too to grandma's from Pleasanton, Ca to Ogden every summer. That was back before the interstate was built too. Mostly two-lane highway then across Nevada. |
