Up storing power in Tracy Ca
Author: dieselman

Checked the yard today and found a single file row of 70 plus SD70 a few SD60m wide cabs plus a sprinkling of GE dash9s.these stretched from the east end of the yard to just east of the new 11th strees bridge. The best light for photos is in the morning. This is a first for this yard since the SP stored cabooses here in the early 80s. This move is very recent:    Mark

These were locomotives that had been stored at Stockton. The Stockton Yard has been "revived"...that's bad news for Roseville, and most expect the Roseville hump to be taken out of service sooner rather than later.

I wondered about this new Stockton - West Colton symbol I've been seeing. Are both Roseville (MRVWC and MRVWCB) West Colton manifests abolished??

Seems as if the MRVWC and MRVWCB are abolished.  Nothing official, but nothing shows up for me.

I don't understand Uncle Pete's current penchant for ripping out humps and bowls in favor of flat switching. How would that contribute to efficient operations?

There is now a line of old power sitting right in front of the Rail Cam at El Paso, TX that appears to be in storage  An SD59 is at the head of the line.

The yard tower at Tracy has been gone for about two decades now.

I've been thinking about this question, too.  I suppose "efficient operations" has less to do with customers and more do so with worker's hours. Could someone explain how many men it takes to sort a train at a hump yard vs. a flat yard? (My superficial take would start with something like this: hump - one engineer, one to uncouple, one to flip the switch to the right track. And I can't guess how many to put a train together on the other end.)

I have posted several incredibly unexciting photos of the stored Union Pacific locomotives – all 85 of 'em – in a separate thread here on TO:
