Western Railroad Discussion > Los Angeles Railfanning Ain't PrettyDate: 09/01/19 17:34 Los Angeles Railfanning Ain't Pretty Author: erielackawanna On Tuesday, August 26, I stopped by Union Pacific's 4th Street Yard while on my way home and ended up chasing the LOW10 Torrance Local instead. There was a conductor on the LOW10 at least ten years ago, maybe more, who once found me shooting the train and asked me, "Why you taking pictures of the Death Train?" That always stuck with me. Well with the tagged power she had on Tuesday I think the name kind of fit. Still a good chase and glad to get it in some different spots (even though I'm intimidated to even post about a LA Local after reading Evan's great post just about 30 minutes ago).
Image one is of some light power running from East LA/Commerce to LATC. On the top right you can see the power for both the LOW10 and the LOW20. The LOW10 was building its train in the yard while the LOW20 crew was on the tie up track awaiting their turn. Image two is of the LOW10 now stretching out its complete train, getting ready to call Metrolink for permission to enter the Main. Image three is taken around 40th Street as LOW10 enters the Wilmington Sub with LA City Hall in the background. Date: 09/01/19 17:36 Re: Los Angeles Railfanning Ain't Pretty Author: erielackawanna Image four is in Watts. The train is leaving the Wilmington Sub here for the El Segundo Industrial Lead.
Image five is near Athens. We are now on the Torrance Industrial Lead. Had to have a little luck with traffic lights to beat it here. Image six is of the train arriving at Conoco. The structure to the right is an aggregate converyer that is used to unload the Robertson Ready Mix Rock Train, which also runs on this line. Date: 09/01/19 17:37 Re: Los Angeles Railfanning Ain't Pretty Author: erielackawanna Image seven is of them beginning their work switching Conoco.
Images eight and nine are of them passing through the patch of street running at the corner of Gardena and Vermont in downtown Gardena. Date: 09/01/19 17:39 Re: Los Angeles Railfanning Ain't Pretty Author: erielackawanna Image ten is now on Normandy. I almost beat them to the S-curve about a mile north of here, but my traffic light luck ran out. At this point I figured the sun was getting higher in the sky, my stomach was getting emptier, and the crew was getting annoyed with me showing up in front of them, so I broke off and went home.

Another unusal look at the LA Basin railroading. Date: 09/01/19 18:38 Re: Los Angeles Railfanning Ain't Pretty Author: callum_out Did you have a National Guard escort? Great pictures, LA has changed though
I'm not sure I'd be shooting in Watts in the sixties so maybe it's better?? Out Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/01/19 18:45 by callum_out. Like the two Gardena shots in the street as I had never taken a shot on that side of the street. In shot nine right where the cross buck is visible ahead of the power used to be a wig wag. Keep up the great work.

Brian Stevens Date: 09/01/19 20:19 Re: Los Angeles Railfanning Ain't Pretty Author: RRBMail The City Hall shot is cool, but with its lingering smog and horrendous traffic makes LA has become ugly! Gone are the sweet smelling orange groves including my family's in Pasadena. But the beaches and surfers are still here, along with magnificent LA Union Station. And, of course our glorious winters!

Sadly, steam engines were a major contributor. Bill Deaver Tehachapi, CA Date: 09/02/19 07:48 Re: Los Angeles Railfanning Ain't Pretty Author: bradleymckay callum_out Wrote:

Date: 09/02/19 17:03 Re: Los Angeles Railfanning Ain't Pretty Author: wa4umr Nice pictures and good comments, but for a midwesterner, I was expecting to see tent cities all along the route. That's all we hear on the news.
About a month ago in Louisville, CSX requested the city to clean out a camp that was on their property. It was under a tressle. The truth is, you probably know where a few of those camps are around the railroad if you are a fan Those things are no pretty. John Louisville, Ky.
