Last Run of UP 2002 on a GEMCO West Hauler
Author: erielackawanna

With the pending removal of UP 2002 from the Gemco west end haulers, I headed out on Monday to get the train in Van Nuys and Chatsworth, but Waze showed Van Nuys traffic over an hour and the coast route to Chatsworth the same, so I decided on Chatsworth only. When I was about 15 minutes away, I got a message that there was an extra LOF67X running and that UP 2002 had been put on the extra, a corollary effect of which being that it was now out of the hauler rotation (or in other words, this was its last run west of Gemco).

Not quite clear on why there was an extra, I set up over the tunnel at Stony Point Park to shoot whatever it was that came. The DS told LOF67X they would follow SCAX 117 and then told LOF67 (separate train) they would follow SCAX 119. Turned out there were 80 cars for Oxnard, so the train was split with the LOF67X running as an extra Oxnard Turn. Shot the extra above the tunnel and then the schedule train at the old abandoned Chatsworth platform at De Soto.

First three images are the LOF67X coming around the curve into the first tunnel at Chatsworth.

Next two images are the "regular" LOF67 (although first time I ever got it with a GE leader) going by the old Chatsworth platform by De Soto.

Is the change from wood to concrete ties at the milepost in picture 2 where the Leesdale-Metro collision occurred?

Great catches, thanks for your tenacity. Nope, twenty or thirty car lengths ahead on the other side of the tunnel I believe?

Pretty sure the 2008 Metrolink-UP collision happened on the east end of the tunnel (over Topanga Canyon), right about where Pic #2 was taken.
Anniversary is tomorrow (9/12).

BTW, what is running West out of Gemco these days?

Are there still two daily Budweiser runs ?

Thanks in advance to those that reply.

Just the Day Bud goes west (it also goes east). It goes as far as Simi to the lumber yard at least once a week (maybe twice?). In recent years it's made rescue runs to P&G in Oxnard, but I haven't seen it do that in awhile. It also on Sundays has gone as far east as Aurant Yard, but I also haven't seen it do that in a bit (a few months at least).

The Night Bud works east only. The Saugus works east only. The Gemco Hauler/Flyer works east only.

The Guadalupe goes west Monday and Thursday (returning Tuesday and Friday).

The Leesdale does a r/t on Wednesdays.

I think that's everything (well, there is the train from West Colton, that arrives after the Flyer leaves for West Colton, I believe).

The LOF49 (night bud) does do bud if needed. The past year or so Budweiser has only needed 1 switch a day. It all depends which job did it last and if there were cars to go into Bud.

The hauler jobs run every night. LOF74 to Colton and the LOQ35 to GEMCO.

Day Bud usually goes up to Simi twice a week. Lately it's been going up on Wednesday with a loaded set out and up again Thursday to pick up the car. I believe the BMC Lumber up in Simi might've requested different delivery dates as in the early summer months I'd see it run Thursday-Friday
