Take this survey, and...

...win no prizes, Just have some fun...

A few days ago I posted a sunset shot of the Missouri River Runner at California, Missouri ( https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,4891665 ) .With a tongue-in-cheek nod toward the coincidental irony, I made light of the idea that 2 state names comprised the name of a singular town. I first knew of "CA, MO" in 1977 on a trip east to spend time with relatives in Nashville. The second such pairing I discovered by traveling through "Kansas, Alabama" in 2013. This is a small town of 200+ which I believe is on the old Frisco main line between Memphis & Birmingham. This is the point where the casual, but willing TO member gets to add valuable input. Is "KS, AL" the only other such pairing of names on rail lines around the country? If not, how many other two-state pairings make up a town names on rail lines in the USA??

I'd say "Enquiring" minds really wanna know, but there's more: TO member Mr 'PHall' mentioned another oddity with the name California. It doesn't tie-in directly with railroading, but it seems there is an institution of higher education in Pennsylvania called California University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1852. This predates the University of California, which was founded in 1868. I'll add one more name-pairing phenomenon which is indirectly connected to railroading. From childhood discovery I've known of a historical figure named Dewitt Clinton who was indirectly related to the RR industry. He was the man largely behind the building of the Erie Canal. In the aftermath of the success of the Erie Canal railroads began their construction push west. Well... in turns out there are 2 towns, fairly close together in the State of New York named "Dewitt" & "Clinton". And it turns out there are 2 towns, fairly close together in the State of Iowa called "Dewitt" & "Clinton". How many other states can claim such a pairing?

Fun with RR (sorta) names!

Indiana, Pennsylvania is another town of note.  Also has a state university, and a railroad

Good Grief, Charlie Brown... I drove right through Washington, Missouri on my way to California, Missouri and it never registered! Now that it has, we have a Washington, Kansas that used to be on the BN (nee CB&Q) branch down to Concordia...

There's New York, New York, but I don't know if there was ever a station by that name.

And, I used to live in Delaware, Ohio. Had 2 RR stations AND an interurban.

Yeah, and Washington, IA, of the former Milwaukee, now CP comes to mind.  Actually, the CP arrives from the east via the former Rock Island.
A long and convoluted story I really don't have time to type up here.  PM me if you actually want the details.

There's a DeWitt and Clinton close together in Illinois as well. However, seems like DeWitt barely registers as a town...but hey, they have a post office!

How 'bout The Oregon-Washington Railway & Navigation Co.

And wasn't there a Washington-Idaho something or other?

The Minnesota and North Wisconsin.
