Private cars on Alameda Corridor
Author: aronco

Sometime tomorrow, a single unit PHL engine will move a private car from Amtrak Los Angeles to Wilmington.  Can someone photo this?

Welcome back from the frozen north Norm. Will it be PHL No. 80 this time like it was in August 2010?

In any case, have a great little, rare mileage trip.

Hope someone time slips this move as I don't believe they have rights on the corridor? The copy of the Alameda Corridor agreement I have does not mention PHL. Of course then probably haven't paid claims in years.

I've seen the PHL routinely (several times over the past 10 years) ferry one or more of their units up to the Amtrak locomotive shops at 8th St Yard in DTLA. Stories I've been told around Hobart Ramp mention they run them up there to remove flat spots on the wheels. I've also pondered how they get there / and who operates them up there.

IIRC, PHL is allowed to run to LA for non-revenue movements only.

Are their crews qualified on the route or is it a BNSF or UP crew making the movement?

On the 2010 trip I posted above it was a PHL crew and I was told they are ATC qualified.

No BNSF pilots on these trips. Technically, the PHL motors don't touch any segregated BNSF or UP mainlines for the moves to and from the ports. Simply traveling up the length of the ACTA operated Alameda Corridor, then turn directly into Amtrak's 8th St Yard at the East Redondo signal off Main 1. I'd be willing to bet there are Amtrak pilots available for assistance once the PHL motors are within the yard limits at the facility, or the PHL crews just have a designated track to park the power near the locomotive shop until Amtrak can hostle the unit around for service.

The access used by PHL may be a tumble-down from the old days when the SP, UP, and ATSF were co-owners and operators of the Harbor Belt Line, and locomotives of all three worked there and routinely went to home shops for work like turning wheels etc.
It would appear that some common sense went into the track agreement.

I am certain the fellow in the picture is not me, as he has a bald spot.  I have never seen a bald spot there!

I've got you totally beat in the bald spot department Norm. Mine got so big I shaved what little was left completely off. LOL!
