Landlocked Railcars and Locomotives in Seatlle or Chicago?
Author: alex14ramos

First off, a big thank you to those who responded to the previous post I made about landlocked railcars earlier this year... This has been a really fun project: https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,4710785

The suggestions were very helpful and I have since investigated and photographed some of the railcars listed.

I am preparing for a trip to Seattle and Chicago and I am wondering if any of you may have any leads or suggestions for landlocked railcars or locomotives to check out. I am most interested in covering new regions outside of California so I'm excited to explore some scouted railcars and would love to learn of any others.

Below is a selection of some of the cars I have photographed this year since my original post.

Locations: 1. Rocklin 2. Oakland 3. Sebastapol

"The Orient Express" aka Andy's Diner, on 4th Ave in Seattle. It's still an active chinese/thai restraunt. Pretty good food too.

Alex Franks Diner in Spokane on 2nd street is in an old dining cars and it has one of the best breakfasts in Spokane. The BNSF mainline is right out the back window.

The SP bay window caboose with a bit of the King City depot (CA) is part of an interesting museum on the west side of King City, maybe a mile from the tracks.
The station is nicely preserved.
In addition to the RR exhibit there is a lot of farm machinery.  The interesting aspect to me was how much use the local farmers made of World War II surplus equipment.
If you are travelling on highway 101 it is a nice 60-90 minute break to walk around and get circulation in your legs and oxygen in your brain, you will have a lot of time to kill if you are waiting for trains on the Coast Line of 2019...:-(

I saw some passenger cars in a hotel near Disneyland in Los Angeles during a trip in 2013.

There is (or was?} a UP 500 class heavyweight coach made into a diner along Sunset Boulevard way out on the west side of Los Angeles.
There are two UP 500 class coaches in east side Perris, Calif., now a Chinese restaurant.
Lomita, CA museum has a steam loco, UP and ATSF cabooses and several freight cars in their park.
Several passenger cars as a restaurant complex at the ATSF depot in San Juan Capistrano, CA.
Lots of cars at the San Diego RR museum south of town -- easy access.
ATSF caboose and three SFRD reefers on short section of track just west of Needles depot.
SP bay window caboose, now a motorcycle shop on road west of Palm Springs,CA.
UP lightweight coach as office in junkyard east of Soto St. in Vernon, CA close to big Sears store.
LA's Travel Town, in Griffith Park LA, CA.
ATSF coach w/model railroad in park in Escondido ,CA.
ATSF coach w/model railroad in park in Bakersfield, CA.

That's all I can think of today, but I'm certain there are more.

These photos of landlocked railcars are great, but please add a caption of what they are and where they are would be a great improvement.

Happy hunting,
Watts local

Speaking of Spokane, decades ago there was a dental office in an E7+pass car, all painted in SP Daylight colors.  Still there?   Another business?

As of about a year ago, it was still there but was a pizza place.

In Chicago, there's a now-permanently-closed diner called "The Silver Palm" on N Ogden Ave and Milwaukee.

There's two land-locked rusting tank cars just off of W 16th St and S Canal St on a small road called S Normal Ave. This is right next to the Amtrak/Metra tracks into CUS where you can also get passenger shots from the 18th St. and Roosevelt Rd overpass.

Here's one from Chicago, now being used for seating in Tutto Italiano Ristorante at 501 Wells Street.  It is near Metra's LaSalle Street Station.

Even though the car is painted in Milwaukee Road colors, I think it came from another railroad, possibly the Rock Island.

Don't forget the former Union Pacific Dome Lounge, UP 9000? next to the Las Vegas Hotel.  Fairly intact on the exterior, still on it's trucks, etc.

The Tuto Italiano car looks like ex-CSS&SB.  Gerry

It is Rock Island. I was there in IIRC 1992.
