At Amtrak, we used a Plastic Bag over the Coupler, worked every time

Please explain about plastic bags. My imagination is having a hard time filling in the gaps.

We would cover one of the coupler . then as the two couplers came together  the low coupler will slide up to a hook .  stretch  the hook  stop make the air . its a old santa fe trick works every time

Sometimes referred to as a "coupler condom".

Yeah, I guess you never know where that other coupler's been.

Yes, rather obvious that a quick fix is to open both couplers.

It's interesting that in 1/4" scale models using the Protocraft operating knuckle couplers that they don't
work worth a damn without opening both knuckles! Guess if you scale an operating issue you sometimes
get the same result.

I knew of a conductor or two that were ornery enough that would have called for another man if they had a brakeman that bullheaded the same two knuckles that many times.

Lmao shh, be quiet! The secret can't get out. Since we don't want to open both. Give the tender's coupler a good boot stomp to the Fireman's side after opening it. Oh well, good thing I wasn't eating popcorn.

The cross member beneath the low hanging drawbar can be shimmed up with a tie plate.

Very safely done by the engineer who knows to pull at least 50 apart for any adjustment of the coupler where a man might need to go between couplers.  What is more puzzling is the box car does not have a straight ail line where the tender has an automatic air has and also a straight line air hose.  I thought all the usable equipment on D&SNR had dual equipment.
