Hundreds of Stored UP Units in KCMO
Author: bnsfsd70

What used to be the hump yard at Union Pacific's now-shuttered Neff Yard in Kansas City, MO is now packed to the gills with units that are now considered to be surplus.  Shutting down humps and storing locomotives are two of the key tenets of Precision Scheduled Railroading, which has swept the industry.  It's a wild sight, to be sure.

Technically, it’s PSR, Precision Scheduled Railroading, but it’s all really a bunch of lies and BS.

It's not just PSR railroading, it's trade policy that has  UP's inter modal business down , that and their Coal traffic down

Coal being replaced by natural gas.....i can see a lot of power being laid up from that....But otherwise, I cant see that this paints a good picture of the economy....

Looks like a bunch of older DC and AC power that are less fuel efficient than the newer stuff.  Anyone need a GE Dash 9 or a EMD SD70M?

Actually the new Tier 4s consume more fuel.

This pic is a great example of the narrow vision of RR management (not getting beyond the next easy dollar to be made) rather than trade policies. They are setting themselves up for failure and somebody else will have to clean the MESS up.....

So, is BNSF, CSX, or NS doing the same thing?

BNSF’s LUGO (Laid Up Good Order) count has risen dramatically of late with more locomotives to go.

CSX..a lot of stored locos at Waycross, Huntington, and Cumberland.

NS..Altoona, Roanoke, and Chattanooga.

All you have to do is read about (or work for one of them) what is REALLY going on in the RRs...??!!

All right there...not rocket science.

The downturn in coal traffic should be obvious in this photo with the numbers of six and seven thousand numbered units shown.

I was also surprised to see a C40-8W, the 9500 unit, in the mix as I had thought the UP and gotten rid of all of them.

Thanks for posting.

Brings back memories of SP's Bull Ring Yard near downtown LA back in the 80's!

The 6456 is a former SP in the 300 series I think.  This would make it about 25 years old, and I don't see any of the units in the picture less than about age twenty?

The amount of business decline to idle this many locomotives is staggering.

It started in the late '70's when SP's older GE fleet was dropping like flies.  GE parts shortage and questionable locomotive maintainence, during high traffic levels, didn't help.
