Western Railroad Discussion > Hundreds of Stored UP Units in KCMODate: 01/06/20 20:10 Hundreds of Stored UP Units in KCMO Author: bnsfsd70 What used to be the hump yard at Union Pacific's now-shuttered Neff Yard in Kansas City, MO is now packed to the gills with units that are now considered to be surplus. Shutting down humps and storing locomotives are two of the key tenets of Precision Scheduled Railroading, which has swept the industry. It's a wild sight, to be sure.

Date: 01/06/20 21:29 Re: Hundreds of Stored UP Units in KC MO Author: pdt Coal being replaced by natural gas.....i can see a lot of power being laid up from that....But otherwise, I cant see that this paints a good picture of the economy....

Actually the new Tier 4s consume more fuel. This pic is a great example of the narrow vision of RR management (not getting beyond the next easy dollar to be made) rather than trade policies. They are setting themselves up for failure and somebody else will have to clean the MESS up..... Posted from Android Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/07/20 04:58 by ns1000. BNSF’s LUGO (Laid Up Good Order) count has risen dramatically of late with more locomotives to go. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/07/20 07:56 by MP555. Date: 01/07/20 09:19 Re: Hundreds of Stored UP Units in KC MO Author: ntharalson The downturn in coal traffic should be obvious in this photo with the numbers of six and seven thousand numbered units shown.
I was also surprised to see a C40-8W, the 9500 unit, in the mix as I had thought the UP and gotten rid of all of them. Thanks for posting. Nick Tharalson, Marion, IA Date: 01/07/20 09:39 Re: Hundreds of Stored UP Units in KC MO Author: ns1000 starsandbars Wrote:

The amount of business decline to idle this many locomotives is staggering. G Date: 01/07/20 10:31 Re: Hundreds of Stored UP Units in KC MO Author: bradleymckay PHall Wrote:

It started in the late '70's when SP's older GE fleet was dropping like flies. GE parts shortage and questionable locomotive maintainence, during high traffic levels, didn't help.
