A 4.6 is not worth getting even remotely excited about. Rattles the dishes and that's about it.

Wouldn't 14 miles NNE of Barstow be out near Afton Canyon? Could be exciting for a crew if the track shifted... Before anyone jumps on me, I grew up in  the Bay Area and understand the magnitude of the earthquake.

Interestingly, there was a similar sized quake today, off the coast of Neah Bay, Washington.  Coincidence?

More like the hills between Barstow and Fort Irwin.

Per the BNSF System Special Instructions, magnatude 5.0 and less requires no actions to be taken.
But I'd probably be looking for rocks on the rails when going through cuts just in case.

Depends how far away the epicenter is. We had a 4.5 here several weeks ago. Epicenter was 3 miles away: lasted 59 seconds and threw a bunch of stuff on the floor.

On the other hand, I was at the Amtrak 16th Street station in Oakland for the Loma Prieta in 1989--now that was exciting.

Did the 1989 quake do a lot of rail damage in LA or where?

Thanks.

Loma Prieta was a 7.1 during the 1989 World eries. All or the majority of the damage was in the Bay area. I lived in San Jose on the south end and we were 17 miles from the epicenter. Quite the shake rattle and roll. Ben

Also the depth of the quake makes a big difference too.
The closer to the surface the more we feel it.

It shook  for ten seconds here in the local mountains.

1989-section of bay bridge collapsed, also some of the freeway in Oakland. We were in downtown LA that night, and felt the rolling.

You must have been the only one's that felt it in LA. Because the epicenter was over 400 miles away.
And the San Andreas fault doesn't go through LA. It goes through Cajon Pass out by San Bernardino.

I was in the shop at the Ventura county Railway and felt a sway and the lights had a mild swing to them. Guess that makes 2 of us.
