Siemens California cars heading to Pueblo.
Author: SP8595

This morning I caught this special heading Eastbound out of Grand Jct. It consisted of a pair of cars heading to the AAR test track at Pueblo, CO. It originated at Florin, CA.

Interesting choice of colors. I am not aware of yellow being used on any existing California rail equipment.

Who idea was it to order them single level. Don't we need more capacity on these trains?

They were originally going to be Bi-levels, but Nippon Shariyo could not produce a cab car that was compliant with the current reguations. It was decided to go with the Siemens cars, since they were in production and could be on the property at least 24 months sooner than any other new Bi-level car options.

Nice shot, John!  Those cars look like toys.

Boxy looking - look like Brio wood block models. Too bad they could not round off the edge of the roof, look more American,

Great photo, almost looks like UP is back in the passenger business.

What kind of testing is needed in Pueblo before they can start revenue runs? And are these cars different enough from the Brightline cars to require new tests?

Doors seem to be different, but they can test them together i would think, making for 4 cars test  trains?

4 cars will be used to develop PTC braking algorithms next week at TTCI.

There's an "American" design ideal - or is there just functional and attractive design?

Keep in mind some of these cars will be in connected sets of two,  similar to pre war cars purchased by the CBQ-Rock Island-UP.
Down side, one car goes out of service, it takes two cars out of service.

The cars shown as lounges are the food/beverage cars,  reported to be Vending Machines.
California orders, coach only, no business class.

I think there are already another pair of there cars in Pueblo.
Do we know more cars were sent out there yet?

I see They are sending CDTX 2102 with Amtrak 79 out that way. Maybe to test all the equipment with both units?

Correct, there are already 2 cars at TTCI. TTCI and WABTEC need 4 cars to develop the I-ETMS PTC braking Profile for the new cars.

Will they be using a full consist with a Cabcar anytime soon?

Cab cars will be the last to be delivered in 2022. Caltrans should be able to start building a full coach trainset by the end of 2020, with the vending/cafes cars start showing up in 2021.

They're based off the Austrian RailJet designs and as such use a large number of common components, fabrication techniques and dimensions. In this case the roofs are likely angled due to common components/manufacturing techniques.

Yep, though interestingly both sets so far seem to have the blank ends, which is odd, and makes me think these are the end cars intended to couple to the locomotive. The actual sets in the end will have gangways/vestibules throughout the train.

The first cars being built are the "end" cars, which will be coupled to the locomotives. The remainder (Caltrans) will have semi-permanent couplers like the RaiJet and Brightline trains.
